Looking at the Maxpedition monsoon or the kodiak.. both look really nice.. high price, but I hear you get what you pay for.

I just want a sling pack for day hikes, school, travel..
What do you guys recommend?

While looking, look at where they are made. Maxepedition gear is made in the US. Most others I've seen aren't. A small thing, but many small things make big things.

I own a Maxpedition Vulture II. Much different pack, but what I can say is they are seriously overbuilt. Mine has been on many camping and hunting trips. It has been wet, muddy, dropped down a rocky hillside, dunked in a river, overstuffed, crammed in a truck bed, etc...not one issue. They are pricey, but built well. What's the old saying: "buy once, cry once."

I bought a Kodiak, and liked it a lot. Then I bought this one:

I am quite happy, and the Kodiak, which she loves, is now with my better half.

I hadn't heard of them before, but a Marine buddy bought another of their bigger bags over in Afghanistan and said it was the most comfortable pack he ever carried. I have to agree.

However, I don't think the mission pack is assembled in the US. The materials are made here, but I don't know where they put it together. The manufacturer is German, but I'll have to check the tag when I get back.

Jeepnik, are you sure about the Maxpedition products being made in the US? I have five Maxpedition products at my desk this morning, and all say "Taiwan". Still, you could just about build a doghouse out of any of the products. I see an occasional piece that should not have passed quality control (bad stitching) but overall, great products.

OP, you might also consider the 5.11 products. Last year at the Dealer Retreat in Scottsdale, this pack was demonstrated with a collapsible-stock MP5:

511 and Maxpedition have both passed my own torture tests many times over. They hold up longer than I do, loaded full of ammo or Costco bulk goods.
