My current carry gun is a 1911 38 super. It started out as a game gun and has now a dual purpose gun. I would like to stay in 38 super but do not want another 1911 in 38 super because they are expensive especially by the time I am done making it right for me. I know Eaa and taurus make 38 super guns for about the same price.

Are there any others?

I dont know much about the tarus PT38 is it a single stack? If not can you get HI cap mags for it? Or is it a short double stack?

Any thoughts on either of these?

I should add that I want to stick to just 1 pistol caliber and I dont really care about DA/SA or any combination there of.

I've heard good things about the EAA, but I'm not sure about the semi-rim in double stack magazine. I've not seen or shot the Taurus.

That being said, I love my new Colt Commander!

I had a Taurus auto in .38 super. I like the cartridge. I had high hopes for it but it had lots of major problems. It was a real piece of junk. I don't know if the one I got was a lemon but it wouldn't get through even one magazine without a malfunctions. I wouldn't buy another. I think the CZ platform is a good one and the CZ's I have handled seemed well made. I don't know of anything else in a DA auto in .38 super. I just solved that with a Glock 32. I believe the .357 Sig is the modern equivalent to the .38 Super...IMHO

The had a stainless Taurus PT38 w/o the pimp getup, but I sold it since I despised the grip feel and it wasn't accurate with anything over 115 gns.

It shot 95 gn .380 ACP bullets out to the 45 and 80 yards steel gongs w/ much enthusiam. Still, Taurus CS sucked big time. They never sent my my rosewood grip panels and when I ordered extra mags, they sent me two mags for the .380 ACP 24/7- after two months from the date of my order.

RIA makes a 1911 38 super which I am thinking of getting, $392. I have heard a lot of good things about them
Yeah I know My 1911 is a RIA 38 super. Got it for $299 but have about $1000 into it now qounting mags reloading equipment and mods.

You need a 'square' grip to comfortably shoot the pt-38. It's cool for up close personal defense, and can shoot with a reasonable rate of accuracy with very light bullets, but I'd rather wrap my fingers around something else.

Once I sell my USPc. 45 in a stainless slide, I might check out STI's offerings.

+1 Witness Elite Match. Perhaps even a better value than the RIA, great sights, great trigger, great accuracy out of the box for a bit under $500. The RIA is a great gun for the price, but you pretty much have to add $100-150 for better sights.

I love my pt38s the EAA large frame is just a smidge too big for my stubby trigger finger to reach.

I don't know about today, but I bought mine for under $500 from a shop who is not known for cheap prices. That was over a year ago though. Still, they would be a great value if you gave $550.

Buds.....$467 delivered, $20 to your FFL. That's under $500. Buds shows the .38 Super at the same price, just out of stock. It may be more if you find a .38 Super somewhere else.
