Anyone know where I can get 'Battle Ready'(read that as 'quality') Dirks and Sgian Dhu's?

dirk

doldsteel has a very nice dirk, museum replicas has several dirks but the quality is not as good. try ebay, search for coldsteel dirk.

www.museumreplicas.com

I'll look up some of the other medieval websites that carry those types... gimme a PM to remind me (I'm a medieval re-enactor and swordfighter).

The Cold Steel Culloden is a good Sgian Dubh with a modern grip, for about $50. I've thought about getting one myself.

Just a note of Caution:

The most of the Dirks over at Museum Replicas are made by Windlass Steelcrafts of India.

Some they make are good, some are not. They have spotty QC in terms of heat treat. If you buy one, it will be a luck of the draw kind of thing.

How much are you planning on spending? Perhaps it would be best to get a pair custom made? There is a fellow over at Swordforum by the name of Jake Powning that makes some OUTSTANDING looking Dirks and Seaxes. Here is his homepage:

Are you planning on cutting things with these blades or are they for your re-enacting kit/dress affair?

I have never handled one of the CS Dirks, but they do look good in terms of function.

Best of luck in your search.

I did a quick Google search with "Sgian Dhu" and found pages of them, many made in Scotland.

Many of them seem to be real weapons, since they stress that some are "Sharp".

Sorry for the side rail, back to the questions at hand.I play the Pipes for several different groups and wear Skein Dubhs and Dirks made in Sheffield England (not good quality) and India (even worse). The both took a good "sharp" edge but really weren't made for anything other than show.If you do a search you can find several custom makers with quality ,correct for the era,goods.tom.

Sgian Dubh

I can't say about dirks, save for the fact that they are way too expensive. I can get an infantry sword made in 1853 for the price of a modern-produced dirk. Heck, my Baskethilt made circa 1760 costs less than some dirks made in the 1800's!

As to Sgian Dubh, have you tried Scottish Lion? They sell some with wilkinson blades on them which are pretty good. They are pricey, as one would expect, but pretty good none-the-less.

Which reminds me of a time when I got kicked out of the Beau Rivage casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. The Beau is a swanky affair and my wife and I went to go see stomp. I wore my kilt, brogues, a Prince Charlie vest and tie, and, of course, my sgian dubh in the sock. Now, my dress SD is metal but for show. When I'm at games, I have a good stag-horn that I wear. Well, one thing led to another and I was told weapons were not allowed in the casino by a snarly woman in a green jacket. I asked about pocket knives, and she said they were not weapons. I explained, first, that the blade was no longer than my Uncle Henry that I keep on my key chain, and considerably less sharp, and that, as a matter of law, the Sgian Dubh, where defined by any law in the world, is legally NOT a weapon and can be worn into parliament. I also pointed out I could do an equal amount of damage with my Pilot pen in my sporran. She pointed out that I would have to leave the Beau Rivage, sgian dubh under cover, and never return.

Fine by me.

Walk outside. Strap your Sgian Dubh to your "unit" or somewhere close to it under the kilt.

If she suspects what you did and tries to find it? Sue for sexual harassment.

Sgian Dubh

hey guys, I got married last month in full kilt/highland gear, as were all of my groomsmen. I bought them all sgian dubhs after checking around the net for months I can tell you, if you want to spend less than $75 go with the Cold Steele Cullodens, or with the JW Newells. I bought the guys the Newells (and $16 cigars) which had black plastic/imitation oxhorn grips, but the blades were sharp. I ordered some from one of the Scottish outfitters and they were absolute garbage, they told me they were made in Scotland but they looked like the garbage you get for $1 each at the guns show junk boxs and had absolutely no edge. Most of the Scottish shops online have very similar knives. If you check out H&H Scottish Imports they have some handmade ones from Comrie Craft in Scotland (their wedpage is Scottishsgiandubhs.com) their stuff is first class, has a real blade with a real edge, and you can get them with stag, cocbolo, ebony, horn and a few other woods, plus silver inlays if you want. They run about $70 and up, but are well worth it. The guys name is James Young, he sent me pics of several knives and let me pick exactly which one I wanted. I got one with plain oxhorn and it is beautiful. It came with a carved leather sheath, definately worth checking out. Boldblades.com also sells his stuff. Good luck, Mal
