I've got a posting in the Accessories Buy and Sell. I've got a 14 yr old daughter that is wanting to get into match shooting. I am looking for some gently used gear to get her started. Glove, jacket, mat etc... maybe even a spotting scope. I would like to see if anyone here can help me out.

Moderators, if this post is not right for this area please delete.

I just thought that since this is the Competition shooting area someone here might be able to help me out.

Thanks, GRP

Is there a Junior club in your area. Our local 4-H club has shooting equipment for those who join the club, gloves, coats, rifles and spotting scopes. They start off with 22's (easier on your pocket book) and if a junior wants to they have AR's they can borrow. The local club even has a AR stocked to fit a girl. Good luck, it's a worth while endevor.

It looks like you are not too far from Perry. It seems to me there should be something around the area for you. It would also seem to me there would be a state rifle/pistol club which could at least send you the the right contact.

Hi P-32

we do have a Jr. team at the club that I belong to. That is where I picked up a Marlin 2000 for her. I need to get sights for it. They sold them off to get a rifle that would be able to be used at Camp Perry (more than a single shot bolt action). Unfortunately she lives with her mother so joining the Jr. League would be out of the question ( I only get her twice a month) She has taken over my M&P 15 and has an old 1022.

I'm blessed that I am within 1/2 hr of Camp Perry, but since I don't have her living with me we don't have the opportunity to belong to the Jr. team at my local club and go to it weekly.

She wants to shoot 25 yrs out to 300 plus so hmmm,,, she is going to be expensive!

talk to champions in New Albany (NE 'burb of columbus)

good luck!

You can get a web sling like used in WWII for under 15.00 on most websights and for a glove use an oven mit or an old ski glove. Even a towel wrapped arond the hand is better then nothing.

But don't let lack of equipment stop her from practicing and even dry firing. Those skills are key and you don't need a coat to learn to shoot. It only helps you after you learn to shoot.

By the way, you might want to look at a Daisey 853. It's a great pellet gun and very accurate out to 33 feet which is standard for pellet guns. It has decent sights and a usable trigger. If you can score 90 percent with this gun at 33 feet you can do the same or better at 50 yards with a .22. But the pellet gun can be shot indoors. We use them at my 4-H club.

Good luck.

check if there is an Izaac Walton league in your area. They do a lot of training through the Schoolastic Clays program and Youth Hunter Ed classes. My kids go and get a chance to shoot with an informed instructor in various desiplines like skeet, small bore, archery etc. And they provide all the equipment to use.

Thanks everyone for your ideas! She has been shooting since she was just shy of 9 yrs. old. She is now showing interest in rimfire and centerfire. She has out shot me in 300 yrd matches already off of a bench. I'm trying to get her some High Power gear and get her on the line. Yet she is really into the precision shooting also.

I will take a look at all of your suggestions and see what we can do!

I really don't want to pay for a new youth shooting jacket if I don't have to, and a used mat is all she needs at this point. Maybe I should post in the pay-it-forward to see if there is gear out there that might be had for her!

A special thanks goes out to Tusker10mm on contacting me about a scope for her! Thank you!!!!!

We are out in the farm lands and there is plenty of opportunity to shoot besides driving to the range. Since I only have her every so often (Two weekends a month) I can't really get her into a Jr. Team. I am working on trying to do so, but you know the rules from the EX..... :barf:

Thanks for all the ideas and keep them coming!

Look around at the auction sites, and the CMP web site to see if anything is within your budget. The state association contact may bring some rewards, also there are many more forums with sale sections. Clubs often have sales, check into your local clubs for upcoming events. Juniors in clubs often upgrade, check with their parents.Check with gunshops that deal in HP rifles, they may have items traded in or purchased from estates or bulk purchases. Speaking of estate sales, look on Craig's list or troll garage sales that advertise sports equpt. You're close to Camp Perry. Put up ads where allowed with your shopping list this summer...go early during the small bore and high power phases. See what may be offered in seconds on Commercial Row. Find someone with a soft spot for juniors. That one cost me a NM M1A.

Good luck! It will be worth it.

Here's a link to Jim Owens site...good deal on scopes/stands and instruction. http://www.jarheadtop.com/default.htm

PS: Grew up in Port Clinton. Still miss the shooting, just not the weather.

Well she now has a nice scope (for her right now). Still looking for a jacket and mat. I did find a glove for her and a good sling. I have to find a scope stand though, all she has is a little tripod right now but she really likes the scope!

Thanks for all the ideas! We will keep searching.

These people have good prices on coats for the beginner http://www.championshooters.com/store/home.php?cat=282
for more advanced shooters try this sight http://www.monard.biz/ I have bought a couple of suits from them quality is good and the prices are some what affordable.
The good news is, is that girls quit growing before boys so you will only have to buy probably 2 suits vs. 3 as they get older. My boy just finished his last NCAA shoot and he went through 3 suits from the time he started shooting percision to his finial collage shoot.
