I am looking for a good priced 223 ammo to practice with. I love to shoot Hornady and Black Hills, but for a college student that stuff is just to expensive to plink and practice with. So I am looking for alternative companies.
A few I have thought about are wolf, Prvi, Silver Bear, or just the cheap walmart stuff.
I am really thinking about Prvi and there are a lot of sites selling it in bulk for a good price.

If you're going to go steel cased, look at aimsurplus.com. I think I remember seeing it for something like 3.79/box. If you're going to go brass cased, the cheapest I've found is at cabelas for either PMC bronze or Federal American Eagle, both of which can be found for $5.99/box if you look.

Wolf stuff is cheap,, but it seems "dirty",, i didnt like having to clean up so much after runnign that thru my AR,, my local "Fleet Farm" sells 200-packs of american eagle .223 for $79.99,, thats good ammo at a great price,, dont know where your from but if you buy on-line "cheaperthan dirt' is about the cheapest i've found with "midwayusa" coming in a close second,, both have great service IMO

Aimsurplus has Silver Bear 62gr HP ammo for $105/500 rounds. This seems to be the best quality, cleanest and reasonably accurate (3 moa) inexpensive Russian ammo out there.

I buy HSM Orange box remanufactured at Sportsman's for 14.50 per 50. Then I reload the cases.

If you want cheap buy Wally World ammo that is brass and save the fired cases. For reloading on the (this is how I started 35 years ago) pick up a Lee Loader with extra change. Now you have the tools to make ammo. They sell the kit for $25.99. So for that price you can get your feet wet reloading. 2009-02-02_165345_Lee_Loader.jpg

I respectfully disagree, If you're going into get into reloading, do it right, get a single stage press, and use RCBS dies, I guarantee it will make reloading smoother, I just started loading, I have all RCBS components, and I love loading my own ammo.

If you have a Dicks Sporting Goods local to you, they usually have 223 at good prices. My local range has PMC for range use, $9 a box of 20. I started rolling my own 223 cause I got tired of the prices and selection.

$9 a box for PMC!? Awful price. You should be able to get 75gr Prvi match ammo for that price if you shop around. Blasting brass-cased FMJ should be about $0.35ea.

I used to feed my 5.56 guns a steady diet of Wolf but now that XM193 is down to $300 a case (and wolf is about $200/case) I'd rather use that and start reloading. Plus if you need to use it for social purposes m193 is designed to fragment while the thick jackets and lower velocity on wolf usually makes it good for punching holes but not much else.

Actually, thats good ammo at a decent price, far from great. A year ago maybe, but now such ammo can be had many places for closer to .30 cents a round than .40, and the higher quality steel-cased ammo (silver bear) can be had for closer to .20 cents a round, or half of what the brass cased Am Eagle runs for you currently

this link usually provides a good idea of whats out there as far as decent deals....
