A gun shop near by is taking orders for the commander sized Smith and Wesson 1911 SC. It will be one of the very few new 1911's that us Mass residents can buy. Does any one here have any thoughts on this gun? The order price right now is 880$. I just may get one.

I did a heckuva lot of research and comparison, and bought one a few days ago...I hit the range with it for the first time early next week. I also have the full-size government model, and it's been flawless in its performance through 800+ rounds...I expect the Sc to be just as good, which is one of the (many) reasons I chose it for my first commander model. For the quality and price, I think S&W makes a heckuva 1911 package.

Marshall: Thanks for the kind words.

Coma: I'll throw out some performance comments on it when I take it to the range for its first outing early next week.

I'm anxious to hear your opinion after the range trip. I'm thinking about one of these, just not sure yet. Gun City here in Nashville has one, $795; too much for me, but lay-a-away... ;) ... and I found one online for $710... still too much cash outlay...

All the reports I've seen indicate that the accuracy sucks - something like 6 inch groups at 25 yards. For a high cost pistol, I think this is unacceptable.

All the news and reports I've read about the Sc -- and, trust me, I read just about everything that's out there about this pistol before purchasing -- indicate exactly the opposite of what you quote...on the contrary, by all reports it's a very accurate and reliable handgun.

I'm confident I'll be able to personally confirm that in a couple days...

Same here...funny thing is...the only negatives I have read is that some people either don't like the billboard slide or they can't get their head around buying a Smith 1911....and if that's all they are complaining about, I may pick one up myself....

Greeting's Folk's-

We have a NIB full size Smith 1911 Sc in the showcase, and I've had
the opportunity to examine it very closely. However, I have not fired
one of these weapons yet. Fit and finish on this gun is really nice; but
I too am not a big fan of the billboard type ad on this weapon. Still, if
money permitted I wouldn't hesitate to buy one!

BTW, ours is priced at $759.88.

Best Wishes,

coma,

The SW1911Sc is a nice gun, but $880 is a bit high. My local dealer offered me one for $710 last October.

Joe

Cost on them is around $670, and everybody needs to make a living... $710 seems a bit like giving it away, but give away's are good... :) I think our Ala Dan's price is quite fair, actually.

Handeled a new used one at my dealers a few weeks ago. Great fit and finish. Was going to buy it but at the last minute decided against it. Changed my mind a few days later but it was history. Could have gotten it for $650. Ya snooze ya loose. :banghead:

People look were the poor man lives  He lucky he can buy a pistol at any price.
I wouldn't mine having one as so as they get rid of the Bill Board and fix smooth the front of the slide.

MICHAEL T: Thanks for reminding me about my home state. I really must get the hell out of this LIBERIAL ses-pool of a commi state some time soon. But untill then i need new toys.

at-home-daddy: I would love to hear(and see) your range report, thank you in advance for it.

Everone else: thank you for the input so far

If you can wait a short spell the billboard will go away. There are pics of the new 2005 model and the slide no longer has the large billboard. A S&W logo of a more appropiate size will now be on the slide.

i guess i've been looking a gifted horse in the mouth. a local shop is selling them for $649...down from $699 before X-mas.

maybe theyr'e trying to close them out before the '05 (non-billboard) models start coming in.

Feb/Mar Guns and Ammo Handgun Magazine has one on the cover. Pat Sweeney gave a very good review of the pistol including including turning it over to his PD classes for them to wring it out. After 1,000's of rounds, they had NO failures of any kind.

I've been looking at them as well and this review drove it home for me.

Finally had an opportunity to get it down to the range this morning (boy, it’s been a long four/five days of waiting…), and to say I’m pleased would be an understatement: it performed flawlessly. I put 150 rounds of Blazer Brass through it, and had no failures of any sort…not unusual for S&W 1911’s (though I’ve heard rumors about other brands ;) ), but even my government-size SW1911 had two FTL in the first rounds (though nothing for the following 750). This NIB Sc, however, swallowed all 150 rounds up and spit ‘em out (and ejected the cases) with nary a complaint. The Novak mags, as well, worked wonderfully – easily loaded the full eight rounds and provided flawless feeding mag after mag after mag. The magazines inserted and dropped as well as they fed. Slow-fire, rapid-fire, double-taps…no problems at all, either with mags or with the pistol itself.

I’d guess the trigger to be 5 or 5.5 lbs., a bit heavy for pure range fun, but since it’s clearly designed to be primarily a carry/defensive gun, that would seem appropriate…and it’s easily fixable if one so chooses. With a bit of break-in, I’m assuming that pull weight will level off to a nice, comfortable 5 pounds even, maybe a bit under. The break is clean and crisp, no creep or overtravel. The trigger itself is sharp on the edges, as was my SW1911 – but a few moments with a small file on the edges easily takes care of that concern.

The grip safety and thumb safety both performed perfectly, though the thumb safety activation is probably a bit looser than a carry pistol should have, but since my SW1911 also has a comparatively loose thumb safety, that seems to simply be S&W chooses to have them. Since I don’t plan to carry this – or, at least, not much – it’s a non-issue for me…but could be a concern for others.

The sights seemed – as near as I could tell without a rest – set exactly at POA/POI. Because of the heavy’ish trigger and the anticipation of recoil upon the lightweight frame, I periodically found myself shooting low – but a few deep breaths, squaring of shoulders and refocusing on proper trigger control got it right back in the center, with the shots falling on top of one another time and time again…it’s an impressively accurate pistol if attention is paid to proper form and control.

The aforementioned lightweight frame – allowing for an overall 28-ounce weight, as opposed to the near 40-ounce weight of a standard government 1911 and a 36-ounce (?) weight for a commander – allows for a balance and feel that is quite unlike a steel-frame 1911, and I quite enjoyed it. It feels nimble in the hand, accenting even more the perfect ergonomics of the 1911 design. The lightweight nature of the pistol also imparts a bit more robust recoil than its bigger brother, the SW1911, but surprisingly not as much as one might imagine; I thought the two were quite comparable. One indication that the Sc has a bit more bark was the redness on the web of my hand…I don’t see that much with the SW1911 – so even if I didn’t particularly notice it, it made itself known. I didn’t see that it added much to muzzle flip – not a snap, instead it just seemed to add a bit more to that “heavy push†of the .45 – so sight acquisition for follow-ups was also comparable to a standard government 1911. I’m not sure how S&W did it, but for all intended purposes, they have designed a lightweight commander that feels and performs just about like a full-size, steel-framed model.

Without going into specific details on the parts, a few things of note: the bushing (one of the few commanders with a bushing, BTW) is incredibly tight on the frame; the slide-to-frame fit appears well fit; the sites are three-dot and S&W seems to have (finally) gotten rid of most of that awkward gap under the rear Novak site; the finish is rather attractive, with a dull sheen that puts it somewhere between nitron and bluing…I’ve no idea how it will wear; the grips on this particular example leave a bit to be desired, but a quick call to S&W has a new set on its way to me right now…now that’s service! In short, if the full-size SW1911 and its components are any indication of the quality within, then I think it’s safe to assume that the hammer and internals are of quality make and top-notch fit. Incidentally, disassembly for field-stripping/cleaning is identical to the government model; it has a FLGR.

To summarize, the SW1911Sc has proven itself to me to be reliable, accurate and an excellent value for the money…and it just feels damn good in the hand.

at-home-daddy, if you bought that at Monroe I hope you managed to wipe off all of my fingerprints. (Lady45s too)

We fondled it several times Saturday.

If felt and balanced nicely.

If it wasn't for those silly front holster shredding grooves I might actually consider owning something other than a Colt.

Hopefully you can bring it out to out next THR shoot at Sam's.

Thanks for the report at-home-daddy, looks like i will have to save up some cash and get one, i got a message from a fellow mass resident to check out another gun shop that "has the lowest prices in NewEngland" if they do i may own one before the end of next month. But I have three pistols i wish to own so before i just jump in i would like to get the best price i can for each one. Guess i have to spend some time on the road and in a few shops.

Nope, not a gun show buy...got this one from its lonely home under glass at a local gunshop. Probably less fingerprints that way, too... ;)

Be glad to. I'd be intererested to see what a fine gun like this can do in the hands of someone more experienced and proficient than me.

Would drop 7 on one but waiting for them to make a Govt. Model and hopefully in 9mm & perhaps .40.

Glad the Billboard stuff is gone!
