I read a short story somewhere once, probably here, about an old man that had hidden a stash of guns. It's set in the future, and some sort of govt. agents are trying to find the stash. In the end he finally tells his grandson where they are, who then turns them in to the agents. I've spent a hour or two searching online and come up empty handed. If anyone knows the story please post a link for me...

Grandpa story

Contact Dillon and get the follow-up story that goes with it. Almost makes it worth while to read it. DennyMac

Although it's a futuristic story, don't forget that very recently, brainwashing children and adults to turn in their relatives and neighbors for violating anything the State says is forbidden, or is antithetical to the Great Collective, was standard in Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, Communist China, Castro's Cuba, North Korea, ad infinitum.

Here in the United States, the left wing gun grabbing politicians and like minded police have urged citizens to turn in their neighbors and family to the police if they think a person "might" have an "illegal" gun.

Those politicians and like minded police of today are no different from the totalitarians of very recent past.

After all, it's all for the good of the Great Collective.

No one should be allowed to be an Enemy Of The State, should he or she??

OH MAN!

I came of age, and developed an interest in firearms and marksmanship during the dark time of the late 1990s. I remember what it was like having to scrimp up money to pay $25 for a beat-to-hell-but-grandfathered-in AR magazine. Reading about this story really takes me back.

It's a stark reminder of where we were at the time, and, frankly, if you could send a list of the cultural and legislative wins we've had since 2004 back in time to when this story was first published, gun owners of the mid-late 1990s would think you're insane.

Here, let me show you a list:

  • Supreme Court ruling in favor of an individual rights interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, including a right to have a gun for self defense.
  • Repeal of the idiotic federal ban on so-called "assault weapons."
  • Repeal of the idiotic federal ban on so-called "high capacity" magazines.
  • Concealed carry exists at some level in all 50 states.
  • Concealed carry is now actually a thing in Washington DC thanks to the efforts of SAF.
  • The NRA now has over 5,000,000 dues-paying members.
  • No less than seven states recognize permitless constitutional carry.
  • The AR15 is currently the most popular civilian-owned rifle, with over 100 companies making these rifles or parts/accessories for them.
  • The Brady Campaign's attempts to harass firearms and ammunition companies with nuisance lawsuits have continued to be laughed out of courtrooms all across this country.
  • There's currently a renaissance era happening in the NFA world, with so many NFA items being ordered that the ATF has huge wait times for approval. Sound suppressors and short-barreled rifles are just a hop, skip, and a jump from being completely mainstream.
  • Legal restrictions on the use of suppressors for hunting and other legal activities have been quietly loosened in many, many states.
  • Hollis v. Holder has a possible shot of actually taking down the closure of the MG registry.
  • Home-built firearms from 80% receivers is a viable cottage industry with a vibrant user base.
  • You can use a 3d printer to squirt out a perfectly viable lower receiver in the course of a few hours.
  • In those states where gun control has won, their victories are hollow and pyrrhic:
    • Gun control passed in Colorado resulted in the ouster of 3 Democrat party state senators, including the President of the Senate.
    • In both Washington State and Colorado, law enforcement has openly declared a refusal to enforce the new gun control laws.
    • Registration mandates in New York State (New York for God's sake!) and Connecticut were met with widespread civil disobedience and non-compliance.
    • New York state's ammunition registry mandate has proven to be so completely unworkable that the governor there has thrown up his hands in frustration and walked away from the law almost completely.
  • The overall fallout from the Sandy Hook tragedy was a loosening of gun restrictions rather than more gun control.
  • Gun ownership is at record highs, despite the media's strident and tone-deaf attempts to claim otherwise.
  • Action shooting sports like 3 Gun and Steel Challenge are popular enough that they get television coverage.
  • Speaking of TV, there have been a handful of reality-tv shows based on building or using firearms.

Could things be better?

Sure. They can always be better, which is why it's important for gun owners to continue engaging in political activism and to donate money to organizations like the NRA, Second Amendment Foundation, and other specialty groups like the American Silencer Association.

But if you believe that a story like this is a reflection of the realities of the gun culture as they exist now, you'll be happy to know that you're deeply mistaken.

Your points are well taken Justin but we are always just one generation from tyranny at best.
I look back at the last month or so and the court decisions and rapid actions in legislative bodies and see that we can never truly say we have won because things can and do change very quickly.
So let us celebrate our wins and good fortune but as you say, continue to support those people and organizations that fight to keep us free.

One correction. If not for some forward looking representatives, we would still be saddled with the AWB.
It had a built "sunset" clause. It was never "REPEALED".

Thanks for Part II, it makes up for Part I being such a totalitarian glimpse into the future.

That's correct, repealing legislation is a much bigger task. We were lucky on that one, although it was included to help pass the legislation in the first place, but you can bet the antis learned from it.

Things are much better than they were then, but worse than when I was young. We have continued work to do. Never relax, because you can bet your bottom dollar folks like the antis will never stop, some well meaning, but some not.

after reading Part 1 ....
I could hear Rod Serling saying
"You've just crossed over into
The Twilight Zone"

Interesting thing is the number of "Assault type weapons" in citizen hands has quintupled since AWB went into effect in 1994 yet the actual number of illegal incidents involving this type of firearm has actually gone down...

There actually is a newer twilight zone or outer limits where an oppressive government works hard to keep everyone average including sports teams. One bright kid is going to be lobotomized but ends up being put in charge by the government to do the tv programming. At one point he has had enough, seals himself in and gets in about 16 hours of provoking broadcasting before they break in. No 2nd amendment per se but same oppressive Orwellian government.
