I would recommend a plane jane kimber custom II but that's mainly because I like full size 1911s. So out of your choices I chose the sa. But I think a kimber would be a better pick. Plus they look mighty fine. U truly won't go wrong with any but I choose kimber.

Of course, whenever asked about which 1911, the Colt 1991 is always my top recommendation for the under $800 range. The Kimber is also a high one on my list. The Springer is a valid choice, as is a Smith and Wesson. I have one from each of these, plus a few more, and have been more than content with each.

The 1911 was a Colt, I believe. Some Knockoffs are great, but I stick with the Colt.

1911's are awesome!

The one my dad gave me. First 1911 i ever owned, and it is a colt series 70 mkIV. I will be getting another, oh yes, soon, very soon.

I have both...A colt series 80 that I bought in 1990 and a Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry II that I just bought about a month ago. I enjoy shooting both. But the Kimber is the most impressive of the two. Using the same ammunition the Kimber has better recoil management even though it is smaller and lighter...

The Colts quality isn't what it used to be...paying for the name...SA's are pretty good guns...seemingly getting better all the time...Kimber gives you
a dependable, accurate gun with somewhat "custom" features that others would charge you a lot for...My pro carry II runs awesome, and I'd put it up
against the other two any day...and I have. Great guns for the money...:)

helz -

I predict you'll be very happy with your Colt. Not only are they well-made, but they've been winning gunfights since the WWI trenches.

Depends on how much you want to spend

I have a Kimber, 2 colts and my favorite....les Baer Thunder Ranch Special. By far the LBC is the best, shoots rings around the others, of course it cost a little more but its the best priced semi-custom out there in my opinion. You get what you pay for...........

You can ask twenty different people and you will get twenty different answers, I would try to shoot each one of them and see which I liked best. I have a Colt and a Kimber and my nephew has a Springfield. They all shoot great and I like each one but the Kimber has a few extras and is more accurate when I shoot it. So that's the one I carry but I wouldn't be afraid to carry any one of the others.

I will agree with KyJim.....stay away from Kimber. My kimber Eclipse custom II was nothing but a paper weight due to it literally jamming 3 times per magazine. After sending it back to Kimber for repairs twice and it still continued to jam......I ended up trading it in for a fully outfitted Glock.
I recently purchased a Springfield Armory MC Operator 1911. I really enjoyed this pistol til about 250 rounds......then the jams started. Failure to feeds mostly. at 350 rounds I had two FTF. At 450 rounds i had another three FTF. and today at 500 rounds i had three FTF. I now have cleaned my Springfield Armory Operator and it is back in the box awaiting to be shipped back to Springfield Armory for warranty repair, and my Glock 21 SF is now back on the night stand and back in the holster. Springfield Armory, unlike Kimber, will pay for shipping both ways if you have to have your pistol repaired. Kimber's quality control is rapidly going down hill, and I will never buy another Kimber ever again due to the circus i went through with them. I am happy with my springfield, but I am a reliability freak when it comes to my firearms, that is why I went back to my Glocks, they have never failed me.

If you have any experience with 1911's you will know that there is a lot that can go wrong with them, i.e. recoil spring weight, extractor tension, parts fitting, using proper ammunition, slug tamping etc.

This is just my experience and opinion, just because I have had problems, doesnt mean you will. I still admire 1911's even after some of the issues I have experienced with them, but if I want a weapon that will work no matter what part of the world (Iraq, Kuwait, Kurdistan) I happen to be in, I wont pick up the 1911.

Good Luck!

Honestly, the only differences between these 3 1911s will have to be determined by the person that owns and fires them.

I tend to be very wary of Kimber, perhaps unfairly so, since I've heard my fair share of horror stories, and the general price that Kimbers go for tends to make me give those stories more attention than they PROBABLY deserve.

If I had to choose just on name, I'd get the Colt. As has been mentioned before, it holds more resale value, and for all the bad-mouthing people give Colt nowadays, they still make pretty darned fine guns.

yea I normally carry my Glock 22 .40 cal just because ive shot 1000's through it and its never jammed or FTF and it holds 16. I wanted a 1911 just because the sky is blue and some of my shooting buds only pistols are 1911's and I wanted to even the score being that my glock always over powers them in the accuracy department but they keep saying its the shooter not the gun. so out of the 3 I got the COLT. here it is, my new lead chunker.

I have 2 Springfield Armory 1911's..

4" Champion
5" GI-45

Both are parkerized, IIRC

My springer was my best 1911. While I didn't get the chance to really test my Charles Daly EFS(sold it to buy a Kimber, what a mistake LOL!) The Springer was accurate, reliable and went bang each and every time. Clean or dirty.

I've had a weak spot for SS 1911's for a long long time. That colt looks nice! I just picked up a Taurus PT1911 SS so we'll see how it does.

Good luck with yours.

Kimber came out swinging in the mid 90's and took over the 1911 market. They were producing better guns than anyone in the game. The company exploded. Business was booming. They had to produce more product to keep up with demand and when that happens quality control goes down. Customer service got sloppy for a while.

Then they caught up. Their production numbers are absolutely through the roof for a company that produces all of the parts it uses in its manufacturing process in house (Except for Grip Panels, Plastic Mainspring Housings and Meprolight Night Sights).

Their quality control has been getting better and better. Go handle a few guns that just came from the factory. You will be surprised. Their customer service has never been bad and they have always dealt with good customers. I actually like their warranty. It is basically stating that we reserve the right to refuse service depending on attitude.

Call them and be sincere and ask for their help and they will bend over backwards to make it right (even if you aren't the original owner or the "warranty" is out.)

Call them up and tell them how to do their job and how crappy their product is and they will leave you hanging.

I have nothing against other 1911 producers. Springfield is a great company, Dan Wesson makes some beautiful and very good quality for the money firearms and Colt is still one of the biggest names in the business.... BUT... uneducated bashing on a firearm production company by people who have likely never actually owned a product made by that company is ridiculous. Your brothers former roommate's opinion is not yours.

Skeletor

I think I agree with your comments on company bashing.
I have owned Colts for 30+ years. I have owned SA for 5+ years.
Maybe I have just been lucky like no-ones business, but I have not experienced problems with any of these pistols except for one SA GI that had FTF and jams from day one. That took one trip back to SA. And they paid for shipping both ways and went over and above to fix the issue and so much more to smooth the whole thing as well.
I hear lots of Colt bashing. But the last three I have purchased have been flawless in fit, finish, and accuracy. I hear gunshop commandos telling me that Colt's are just not what they use to be. But the people I KNOW who have purchased Colts tell a different story. The Colt forum on M1911.org tells a story of happy owners and quality products. So who is right? Who knows? When friends have had problems with the 1911 it is often the result of an "improvement" that they, or a "gunsmith" made to the pistol. But no matter what, the blame is laid at the feet of the pistol in question.

Now, I do not care for the series II Kimbers. I did not like the external extractor and I do not like the Schwartz firing pin saftey. I will not consider a Smith for the same reason.
And purely personal taste, but I hate the giant Kimber script on the side of the slide.

Now, any company can produce a lemon, and some companies can sometimes produce a diamond. But I really wonder if the people who complain the loudest have even seem the very product they rage against.

I see alot of Colt bashing and ALOT of Glock bashing. I just know I love my new Colt 1991 A1 and also love my glock 22. both run like a champ, never jam or ftf, and fit my hand very well. I have many other pistols but those are my two favs. I have a friend that has a kimber and his is nice but he said it had that "x amount of rounds fired break in" before it stopped jammingthat I was told that my colt would require. I guess i just got lucky and got those cool "prebroke in models" ya hear about every once in a while. Ive never had my hands on a SA so I cant say much for them. but I think Im liking my Colt more then my Glock which Ive had and carried for almost 2 years now. The colt has just won my heart over while my Glock sits in the safe with its poor little glocky heart broke along side all my other pistols that dont get much carry time. So that bulge in my side isnt a Glock any more, Its a Colt.
