This will be my first handgun, though I have fired many of my dads, but most of his are decades old. So i'm just wondering what prices I should be expecting for new or used p226's. I want a 4.5 inch SA/DA, all black. Also whats the difference between the two hammer styles I've seen. I've seen full external hammer, and small external, looks like it will stick out when cocked but retracted when uncocked?. Is this just for carry purposes and to keep it from catching on things? I want one with a full hammer. Here are two links to the different hammers, though i think the second is DA only.

Next gunshow isn't until september, so i'll have plenty of time to look around. Anyone know of good deals on the internet or stores around central iowa (new bass pro shop, but never been) or scheels. What prices should i be looking for at a gun show or around local stores? Anyone know the MSRP?

Any help in finding a good gun will be appreciated, thanks.

Bud's price seems pretty fair on a new 226.

I don't know about the different hammer styles.

One idea: there are a million 226's out there. Sig has a certified pre-owned program where they refinish and replace parts on Sigs and then re-sell them, for around $550 or so, and the one's I've seen look pretty darn good. You might be able to get one at a Cabela's or other chain store. I've seen 'em at Sheel's, too.

Otherwise, you're in Iowa, and one thing Iowa has is good Estate sales. Keep an eye out (use the internet) for an Estate sale that has a 226, and buy it there.

Also whats the difference between the two hammer styles I've seen.

the full length hammer is the standard DA/SA hammer

the stubby looking hammer is for the Sig DAK action, the DAK is a DAO system which has a very light DA trigger stroke...much like a nice revolver

your best by in a used Sig 226 is a LE trade-in gun. they usually don't have many rounds through them but were carried daily in holsters, so they will have holster wear. the LGS has been selling them for $449

If going with a Sig 226 in 9mm, I would definitely recomend an older West German model. They can be had in the $400-$600 range. If you do end up finding a W.German model, make sure you inspect the frame rails for any abnormal wear. A black(great), gold(good), or dull silver(ok) color on the rails is normal. If you see shiny metal on the rails then you may want to pass on it unless it is a steal.

I picked up my W.German 226 about 2 years ago and it is an excellent example of the old school Sig quality. Mine isn't pretty, but it runs great and is still very accurate. If I was going to carry a DA/SA pistol, it would be my first choice.

I have suggestion for you Reneage, since 1st this is your first hand gun and 2nd it is a better value than buying the P226 in 9mm alone.
The Sig P226 is an excellent weapon and great choice. I propose you buy it with the factory .22lr conversion @ $479 then get yourself the 9mm X-Change conversion kit @ ~$369 for a total of $848. So, for a few bucks more than the CF 226 you basically get two guns....practicing with with .22lr will be great for shooting skills and the $$ you save over 9mm will quickly make up for the price difference..and then some ;)

Sig 226 .22lr @ Bud's

P226 9mm X-Change kit

(these show out of stock but Top Gun gets them frequently, you just have to be quick on the "order button" and at least around here most local shops have a few on hand....incl the CT Cabelas)

Thanks for all the replies, a few questions. Where to I look for police trade ins? Do local gun stores stock them, or do I have to contact the police department or something?

How to I identify a West German model vs a newer one?

And is the lower part of the .22 version the exact same as 9mm? Is buying the .22 version and switching to 9mm the same as just buying the 9mm version to begin with? I would like a .22 conversion kit so I might go that route. And also I can buy the conversion kit without an FFL, just the lower part is considered the gun right?

Thanks for all the help.

Check Top Gun Supply, they seem to be the standard for Sigs.
For used, there are some Euro police trade in's that are good deals if you don't mind some holster wear.
Oops, I see you heard that. topgunsupply.com will have trade-in's as well as J&G Sales, and Bud's and Gunbroker.com
I'd also recommend you check out the Sig forum and see what's for sale there.

It is the "same" lower.....so yes, with a 9mm kit on, it is the same gun as buying a 226 9mm alone ..and keep this in mind, if you go the other way and buy the 9mm first at $800+, then a .22lr conversion for it at $300 ..you just cost yourself $250 :(
You are right about the uppers(conversion kits) no FFL needed.

In my area, a few of the police departments issue the 226 but they all have 8-10lb triggers that the officers seem to hate. I have a 226 that I swear by but it has the DA/SA trigger. IMHO, I'd wait for a good DA/SA.

So whats the difference if the lowers are all the same?
(maybe)It is a marketing ploy by Sig....a different part # dependent on what X-Change coupon comes in the case...To be sure try calling Bud's directly and just ask ;)

The W. German Sigs will have "Made in W. Germany" on the slide. There will also be proof stamps on the chin of the slide, including a two letter year of manufacture code.
