Dear THR:
I have come across a deal with a friend where I might have to give up one of my pistols. Either an old Sig Sauer 220 Euro model HH (1977) with 4 magazines or the Springfield 1911 with match tigger and hammer, nowlin match barrel and novak sights.

Which would you let go and which would you keep. Please elaborate your choice in discussion.

Thank you

It would depend on what else I had and what I used them for.

If those were my only 2 pistols, I would keep the Sig.

I'd sell the sig

Old gen1 sig vs common 1911

For me I don't see the sig as a collectors gun so I'd look at the two from a range gun stand point

The 1911 should have better accuracy and a very light pull weight, little pre travel, short reset, almost no post travel- being a match grade trigger/hammer/sear.

I think the 1911 would be easier to replace later on even if it does have custom work, so I'd probably sell the 1911 before I'd sell the old school P220.

And I accidentally voted Sig...

It depends. If you can do your own smithin' or you want to have more custom work done, ditch the Sig and keep the 1911.

If you're more of the buy it and shoot it type then ditch the 1911 and keep the Sig.

Of course we all know you oughta have both.

Thanks for the responses.

I was also leaning towards letting the Springfield go.

The trade involves multiple guns like DE, Tactical USP, Glock 25th Anniversary, SW 629 and cash etc. So its complicated.

In that case, sell the one you can get the most money for.

I would keep the SIG P220. One of the sweetest shooting .45's I owned was a BDA and I should never have let that one go.

Much as I like 1911's over my Sig P220. I know I'll never replace that old sig since I doubt I'll ever find another that shoots so sweet.

Good 1911's are (relatively) a dime a dozen in terms of availability. Keep the Sig.

I would get rid of the Sig. I replaced mine with a Colt LW Commander, better trigger without the DA/SA adjustment, thinner, and has a real safety.

To me, the question appears flawed. But, I have many handguns that I would or could dispose of before I had to make such a decision.
If I had to make such an unpleasant choice, I would choose to dispose of the more common 1911 & keep the 1977 Browning imported SIG/Sauer.
My reasoning would not be based on superior functioning or design of one over the other, but the question of which one would be the most difficult to replace.
Early SIG/Sauer P220's are no longer common, while 1911's are.

Both are great guns, but easy choice for me. Sig P220 is too big for my hands, while SA M1911s are what I use as base guns for custom builds.

I would keep the one I had the most use for. Unfortunately, you didn't provide any information as to what your main purpose(s) is for the pistol (i.e., target shooting, hunting, home defense, carry concealed, range toy, informal plinking, etc.). For instance, if I wanted the pistol to compete in Bullseye events, I'd keep the 1911. If I needed the pistol to carry concealed, I'd opt for the SIG. If I wanted the pistol for target competition and to carry concealed, I'd pick the 1911. And so on.
