Lots of people in NY don't know about this one

I am not sure if this is NY State law (it's been a while since I looked it up) but it is certainly NY City law. You cannot purchase ammo in any other caliber except for what you own and illegally possessed (meaning unregistered and unlicensed) firearms do not count.

so what caliber can be construed as "ONLY" pistol ammo? I don't care what caliber it is, they should sell it to you without a "permit" check. come up with a "pistol caliber", and i'll bet someone on here can think up a rifle that takes it.

No one said New York makes sense. It is a horrible state in so many ways. Too bad, it's one of the most beautiful states in the country, especially upstate. Politicians have ruined a good thing (again).

I specifically said pistol ammo.

long arm ammo des not require a permit, as you mentioned. I wonder if the new laws changed that?
What is pistol ammo? 32acp and 380acp are the only 2 I can think of and I wouldn't be surprised if a long arm has not been made for them at one point.

that's the point I was trying to make, its impossible to say something is "pistol" ammo. even 25 acp could be used in an single shot rifle that used to be 25 rimfire. that's why I never get any questions when I buy 38/357, how are they going to say its only pistol ammo when I can point to rifles in the shop that use the same ammo?

Sounds like a mighty big expense for the NY law enforcement as well. I'm sure they'll all appreciate the increase in their ammunition and training budgets that will necessarily go along with completely replacing all their ammunition with specially coded ammunition that has to be manufactured SPECIFICALLY for the state of New York.

Should this ever become law, I'm sure a case example will be generated for a trip to the Supreme Court. The basis would probably very likely hinge on the very wording of the Second Amendment that says "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

It's hard to provide security for ANYTHING if you also infringe on the ammunition for said arms. The arms, in fact, cannot be said to be "arms" if you cannot also have as much of a right to access to the ammunition as the arms themselves. The two necessarily go hand-in-hand.

Law?

About this bill passing....From what I understand, it has, at least, passed the Assembly ("referred to codes", I was told, means that the Assembly passed it).

Infringement.....that is the nefarious part of this. The law does not prohibit buying, possessing, or using ammunition.....it just has to be coded and it will cost more.
I can see this bill/law wiping out shooting sports like IPSC, Bullseye, CAS, etc. in NY.....any shooting sport that requires a high round count.

Larry you are incorrect. there is no NY State Law that requires you to have a pistol permit to buy ammo and you do not have to own a gun in the caliber you are buying. that was the stores policy where you tried to buy the ammo. walmart does that. they are onboard with bloomberg
