Loudest gun you've been around or fired?

Does a 106mm recoilless rifle count?:D

That puppy would take the blousing right out of your trousers if you were too close when it fired.

I've never been around a .50BMG or S&W 500, are they really THAT bad?

The only time I've had my ears ringing from guns was when I was stupid enough to walk into a covered outdoor range without yet putting on my headphones. A 12-gauge, a .50AE Desert Eagle, and what appeared to be a Remington 700P in .308 went off right in succession near where I was standing. The shotgun wasn't that terrible, but the Deagle and especially the .308 - OUCH!!! I learned my lesson...

Hi all,

Some time ago I remember being 400m downrange from a previously undetected battery of Army 155mm Paladin's that just received the "Fire for Effect" order. That was pretty loud and a lesson in life to my young 2LT on map reading skills.

My first handgun - GP100 .357 magnum. Packed it on a hike just after I bought it and decided that was a good time to try it out. "I don't need no stinkin' earplugs I'm in the wide open." Big mistake; ears rang for 30 minutes.:cuss:

A friend has a Czech Mauser vz33 police carbine that's a Yugo rework. It has a 16" barrel. We used to shoot it with Prvi Partizan 198gr. 7.92mm ball. It was incredibly loud, had a flash like a 16" naval rifle and hurt equally on both ends. I used to have a Commission '91 artillery short rifle. It had all of the aforementioned qualities.

120mm Smoothbore of M1A1

Especially anywhere near the tank on the outside. INside with a CVC helmet ain't bad. If you are forward of the thurret, you are toast. 105mm is pretty bad too, but not like the 120!

I don't have any particularly good stories, but in a related vein a friend of mine was on the Army rifle team at Ft. Eustis in the '50s. He's told me about shooting 1903s, M1s, and M-14s day-in and day-out, entirely without hearing protection.

Did I mention he's now nearly deaf?

Loudest gun been I've been around? Six pounder cannons.

Loudest rifle touched off? Probably my 1895 .405WCF or even perhaps my Gibbs .308 Jungle Carbine with a short barrel and muzzle brake. That's unreal loud too.

my brother has a .357 that is absolutely crazy loud. i were ear plugs all the time, but when he fires that i wear the plugs and cover my ears. revolvers.

Muzzle noise of 175mm howitzer right oer my bunker, incomming noise from RPG several yards away. (incomming ground shake from B52 "ArcLight" strike -many large bombs in several strings).

Thats not as bad as shooting 50 rounds of 9mm and 45 acp without ear protection. My ears rang for over a month and I think they still are. Dumbest thing I ever did. :uhoh:

My T/C Contender in .45-70 Magnaported, indoor range. It blows out all wall furnaces and causes everybody to put down their guns and back up in disgust.:scrutiny: :uhoh: I don't fire it indoors at all anymore, and consequently, am more well received at my ranges.;)

Ive been in an indoor range with a .500 S&W

Ive been in an indoor range standing next to someone with a Desert Eagle in .50 AE

Ive also been in that same indoor range, about 20 slots down from someone with a full auto HK G3. That thing reverberated through my bones. lol

I was at a range once in Maine with a guy who'd brought a Lahti. :D

I love those things. We were outdoors and that thing rattled my skull. A nice lady 5 stations down jumped so hard her safety glasses came off. :neener:
