Low-power scope for AR

In that price range ($399) there's the SWFA SS 1-4x24 Tactical scope.

It's a really good scope for a decent price. After that I'd make the jump into the Trijicon Accupoints and those are at the top end of your budget.

The SWFA looks a little busy for my tastes. I'd totally overlooked Trijicons, though. Some of their scopes look really good. The only major difference that I can tell between the AccuPower and the AccuPoint is that the latter doesn't require batteries. Is that correct?

I'm leery of a scope with illuminated reticle for $250.00 or less. I like the VX-R line by Leupold and have a 2-7x33 with Firedot 4 on my AR. If you want lower magnification you can get 1.25-4 and 1.5-5. The VX-Hog with illuminated reticle is a great all around scope for an AR IMO.

If you looked through it everything besides the diamond, the dot and the hash marks/ladder actually kind of blend in once your eye has adjusted.

Yep, that's pretty much it. The Accupoint and the ACOG both run off dual illumination for the reticle and the illumination for the Accupower is battery operated.

There's slight advantages and disadvantages to both. The Accupower has an edge over the other two in only one area really and that's if you're in shade shooting out into a sunny area, then the reticle isn't lit up well at all and the area behind your target is. In such a situation with the Accupower you just crank up the power and your reticle instantly becomes more visible. With the Accupoint and the ACOG there's literally nothing to adjust. The advantage with the ACOG and the Accupoint is that there's nothing to adjust, it self adjusts and let's in the amount of available light or it uses the tritium to provide it.

I'm kind of a Trijicon fan-boi, really like them. I got spoiled by the clarity and now I'm spending as much for optics sometimes as the rifle and I'm starting to look at scopes like Swarovski.

I've been pleased with the Leupold MarkAR 1-4x I picked up last year. For a Leupold, the price I got at Optics Planet was very good. Happy with the glass, the reticle seems useful, and the green illumination is practical without being too much.

I got the Leupold illuminated Mark AR 1-4x and the Aero Precision EXTENDED mount for under $440, shipped.
Anyone with a 'hawk block in front of their barn is OK by me.

Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 with a illuminated reticle. Its made for the AR platform. We have a couple of Nikons 2x8s which work great at the range. the Vortex has capped turrets which won't accidentally get bumped out of zero. Both have very useable glass and work well with bifocals.

I like my Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24. Selection of reticles. They just replaced it therefore some deals could be in the near future. http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-pst-1-4x24-riflescope-with-tmcq-moa-reticle

Have mine mounted to an AD Recon.

I have the same set-up on one of my ARs, cept it's the older Vortex Viper PST 1-4X with the capped turrets. Really like the AD Recon mount, solid and repeatable. The illuminated reticle lets it act like a big RDS when on 1X.

I have a few of the Bushnell Throw Down PCL's - more than a few folks that have tried mine ended up buying one.

1. FFP (if you know what that is).
2. Etched reticle (battery dies, still have reticle).
3. Folks with LASIK etc. say they have no problem with the illuminated reticle (as they do with EOTechs, etc.).

I paid $299 at Walmart when they first came out - the last couple I bought from Palmetto State Armory for $149, but they're currently out.

With all that money you save you can then splurge on a Bobro mount (my favorite).

I have a Mueller 1-4x24 speed shot on one of my ARs. Very simple display...a daylight-visible red dot only. The first focal plane feature makes the dot small at 4x to support fine aiming at distance, and the dot is big at 1x to support quick acquisition of close targets.

I really like the price point: about $200.

My only quibble: I can't seem to find a cat tail for it.

Try MK Machining. They 3-D print those cat tail levers for a lot of scopes, and might have one that would fit yours. They're REALLY inexpensive, too.

jh,

Natchez Shooters Supply is having a sale on Leupold VX-6 (1-6 power) scopes with the 1-6 power AR scope for $749. I bought mine about a year ago for $899 so it's a good deal. I also have a Leupold 1-4 Vx-2 scope on another AR (with an uncluttered duplex reticle) for about $300. So here's a couple scopes to consider at your low and higher end range.

good luck- oldandslow

The other day I was at a nice LGS that has Vortex and Leupold and some others. They are mounted on synthetic dummy stocks so you can shoulder them. I looked through all of them and was most impressed with the Leupold VX-Patrol 1.25x6 (IIRC).

Was clear, clean and I liked the circle with the fire-dot in the center. I'm gettin one for some rifle. And I have a slew of other scopes already to choose from. First Leupold that just blew me away. Seriously impressed with eye relief and clarity. I'd put one on a 375 H&H w/o hesitation. Plenty of eye relief and good sight picture with my glasses on :D

I have the Nikon on an AR. I couldn't agree more that for the money spent you couldn't do any better. It's well under $200 and I've seen it as low as $149. If you're shooting quarters at 100 yards it might not be for you with the 3x but for most AR duty it works well. I used the Nikon mount as well and am very pleased.

I am also a fan of the 3X Nikon. I would love to see a Monarch version though. While the glass is nice in sunshine, it lacks a little in the shade and at dusk. I would love to see this with better glass. Hint hint Nikon. Oh, and with your choice of open or covered.

Has anyone here tried the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x?
That was the other scope I had in the running against the Leupold Mark AR1-4. I read a lot of reviews and threads on both. In the end I picked the Leupold figuring the better glass and "Leupold-ness" :D was worth more to me than the extra 2x power. Some folks seemed to love the Vortex, but several accounts were of "tried it and sent it right back."

I'd love to have been able to do a head-to-head.

Is the Leupold a true 1x at the low end? I'd like to be able to do the same kind of both-eyes-open shooting I do with dot tubes when at the bottom magnification.

No, but that isn't required. You can shoot with both eyes open with scopes with much more magnification than that without a problem.
