Believe it or not, the Vihtavouri #4 calls for Large Rifle Primers for their .38 Special loads. In particular, I wanted to use N330 and 158 gr. LSW.

I think I will substitute CCI 500 SPP in lieu of LRP. :D

Maybe in Finland Oy they still use LPP .38Spl. Never heard of a LRP .38Spl. .38Spl just never was considered "a rifle cartridge." Anywhere, anytime. Now, .38/55 (WCF) is a different story. That is a rifle cartridge and far as I know always used a LRP.

I know of old (1940s - early 1950s) .357 Magnum cases using Large primers (presumably pistol primers) but I don't recall large primers in .38 Special.
I do know some IPSC shooters who ventured into overpressure 9x19mm loadings used small rifle primers to deal with the pressure.

Perhaps something along those lines?

Well, here is one of the pages from my Vihtavouri 4th Edition manual.
I have never used Lapua .38 Special brass. Maybe the Lapua brass uses large primers???View attachment 1063369
I’m going to guess that’s a misprint. Unfortunately I can’t check by going to the Lapua site. They don’t currently list any .38Spl. It would be interesting if there were some brass swaged for LRP but not particularly useful.

Yes, I was sure it was a misprint when I first saw it. I posted this as much as for instructional purposes for the newbies in the game as anything. Just because it is published it doesn't mean that it is accurate or to be taken unquestioned and verifying the data you have online or with other sources is always a good idea. That and I thought there was a little entertainment value, too. ;) Anybody can make a mistake. The VV online data shows the small pistol primer and not the large rifle primer for .38 Special. Like most of the long time handloaders here, I have Hornady, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Berger and Nosler manuals in addition to the Vihtavouri manual. However, I do not normally keep my old manuals. When a new one comes out, I buy it and pass the older one on to someone else that can use it. Because there are constantly new powders and components and formulations can change over time, I feel much better about using the latest data than using the older manual editions. If there weren't changes in components and methodologies, there would be no need for new manuals. Or at least that is my viewpoint.
