At home, posting on THR instead of working.
I live in the humid tropics and have almost given up on buying expensive breakfree CLP to protect my personal arms from rusting. Also, low grade machine oil does a piss poor job of lubricating gun actions. Hence, I'd like to try using fully synthetic motorcycle lubrication oil on my guns as a long term lube and protectant.

I bought 0.75litres of caltex's revtex 2T oil the other day.

would application to the internal parts of any stainless steel firearm be harmful?

This is a situation where you may be "Penny wise, Dollar foolish".
To save a few cents on protection you may cause many dollars of damage to expensive guns.
Once a gun rusts, it's there forever, and a re-finish is still a re-finish, which lowers value.

CLP Breakfree is one of the very top effective rust proofing lubes, and if you buy in large sizes, it's not all that expensive.

Motor oils are just that....motor lubrication oils.
They aren't intended to be rust preventatives, and some may be very poor at that.
Essentially you're risking some valuable guns by betting you can save a few cents by using something that was never made for the purpose you're using it for.
This is a crap shoot on which you're betting your investment in your guns.

You don't like hard-chrome? For my firearms, I like M-Pro 7.

I don't intend to chance my more expensive pieces using motor oil as a lubricant/protectant. The idea is to be able to affordably and quickly pour about 5 tablespoons worth of the stuff into the receiver/barrel of a beater shotgun or .22 rifle to finish the maintenance routine. Do you guys know of anyone else who uses motor lubrication oil on their guns?

I've been using Mobil 1 (15W) on my guns as a lube & protectant but just tried Breakfree CLP and like it better because it goes on easier and is a whole lot less sticky. I do still use the Mobil 1 for lube though, I don't care what anyone says it doesn't get better than synthetic motor oil for lubrication.

I'm with my friend dfariswheel on this issue; as Break Free C-L-P is
one of the finest lubricant/protectants out there. I use it on all of my fire
arms. I noticed just last night that I'm 'bout out, and need to purchase
some more~! :uhoh:;):D

Eezox is also good, but dries to a silky smooth touch; and you have
no way of knowing how good a job its doing. For long term storage
of firearms, NOTHING comes close to beating RIG.

I'm not sure how much rust protection you'll get out of motor oil. It might work great, but I don't want to be the guinea pig. I use Mobil 1 as a lube when going to the range and such, but for long term storage in a humid climate I use something else.

CLP did a poor job when I lived in TN. For a lube it's ok, for rust it doesn't do a good job. CorrosionX works like a champ.

I have used Eezox for several years and I live in good, old, wet, rainy western Oregon. I have found Eezox to be the best product for lubrication and rust prevention I have ever used. Let me be quick to add that rust never rests and, even with Eezox, you have to remain vigilant and "keep after it".

I got a trial sample of MiliTec 1 through their website a couple of years ago, and the first thing I tried it on was my CRKT M-16 knife. I followed the clean with a degreaser, warm with a blow dryer, apply Militec and let set, and wipe dry procedure. Several weeks after applying it, I lost the knife. I really missed that knife, for almost a year, and low and behold, while cleaning a pistol one day, I found it in the bottom of the gun cleaning box (a large tackle box converted to cleaning kit). I was happy to see my knife, but also amazed to find a bottle of cold blue had leaked in the bottom of the cleaning kit and a lot of stuff in the bottom was rusty (that stuff is corrosive big time). The knife however, was untouched, not a flek of rust anywhere. I started through the safe completely dissass. everything and treating . I have been very pleased with the rust protection as well as smooth operation of everything treated with MiliTec.

I use a silicone rag on mine and never have a problem. I live on a strip of sand about 1/2 mile wide with the ocean on the one side and the sound on the other. I do most of my shooting in The Great Dismal Swamp. Any firearm that is carried gets treated to great quantities of sweat. If the silicone treatment was not going to work, I would know by now.

I try not to let mine sit still long enough to collect rust!:neener:
I'm not too far up the road from obxned, and use the heck out of the silicone rags. Everything gets wiped down at least once a month, especially during the hot and humid months. I also use those vpc things in my gun cases and those big dessicant cans in the gun closet. I am probably an "over-doer" when it comes to cleaning and lubricating my firearms, but it sure can't hurt. I've used a multitude of different formulas over the years, and I can't tell you if remoil, clp, eezox or any other does a better job of preventing rust. If you wipe and clean frequently, you won't have a problem. The ole' ounce of prevention thing.....

obxned....we gotta get together and shoot sometime!

I've been living in a nasty marine climate for a little over 5 years now and have used Break-Free CLP exclusively up until a year or so ago without a problem.

The climate is actually worse on me than it is my guns.:D

I still use Break Free CLP and LP for lube and field cleaning in hunting camp, but I coat the outside with Bullfrog. It's done wonders for our cruiser shotguns.

Been having good results for years with Birchwood Casey Sheath...wipe down all my guns exterior with it and have had no problems. Very good for anything parkerized..gets in the pores and is a water displacer as well.

High humidity here in summer....some of my guns sit in the safe for months between shoots and a wipe down/inspection...no suprises yet.

I don't see how the motocycle oil could hurt anything.

Try automatic transmission fluid. It works very well as a gun oil, is a decent cleaner, and a good protectant. Plus, it's cheap.

I'm trying something new called "Weapon Shield" in a head to head test with Militec-1. I don't know firsthand how it will hold up but if you are interested in following along then see this thread (Great Lube) for details.

It started out with my discovery of Militec-1 but as of post #13, Weapon Shield has entered the fray.

I also have a friend who is donating a screwed up gun barrel for the corrosion testing but that will have to wait until I actually get the barrel from him.

My SS 1911 will rust from body exposure. Corrosion X stopped this from happening. It will travel and migrate to every part of a piece and is advertised for use in humid wet environments.
My 1911 mechanic Gary Growe showed this to me.

I like using Kano Kroil.

This stuff seeps very deeply into the metal and disolves/prevents rust. It's an excellent cleaner and lubricates also.
