I have posted on the collectors forum but Im Trying to cover all my bases.

I have a Luger that has been locked in the family safe for years and was hoping sombody could tell somthing about it. I do not have pics as of now but I will give a discription.
- Some rust due to being stored in the holster for years in a old railroad safe. Minor pitting, nothing a cleaning would not fix.
- Serial number 3049 stamped on the bottom of the barrel and left side of the chamber.
- 49 stamped on several other parts- the extractor, left side of the reciever just to the rear of the 3049 serial, etc.
- on top of the chamber it is stamped 1917 and has four inspector stamps on the right side of the chamber/ reciever.
I not sure how we got it. My gradfather built bombs in WWII but my grandmother's bother fought in Europe(maybe a bring home?)
Anyway, any light you can shed on this gun and its history would be appreciated.

PS The holster is marked Hans Dueter/1939/Augsburg/followed the nazis emblem and WaA136

As you probably have guessed, 1917 was the year it was made and there should also be a fancy script "DWM" mark or the name ERFURT on the top as well. It sounds like a matching # pistol, and correct WW1 era Lugers (the correct name is the P.08) will have magazines that have wood bottoms. As for the rust, take some 0000 (that's four zeroes) steel wool and BreakFree to the areas where there is surface rust and gently rub it. Wipe it down with BreakFree afterwards and leave a light coat on the pistol when you're done. Is the holster black or brown? Black is the more common color for Army and SS use, whereas brown was normally used by the Luftwaffe (air force). If the holster's closing strap is vertically attached to the body of the holster instead of horizontally on the flap then it is a Polizei (police) version.
