I am considering a Mauser Luger. The only thing that gives me pause is that both straps are worn much more than average. The back strap is almost completely gray and the front has more than average wear.

Is this an indication of extensive firing? Or, perhaps dry firing? I want the gun as a shooter and do not want one that is excessively worn. The bore is excellent.

It proves the Luger was handled a lot over the decades but you'll have to inspect the bore and toggle/receiver for wear to determine if the pistol has a high round count. There are many old guns that have been handled a lot and shot a little. With an excellent bore it sounds promising.

Unless you are referring to some kind of abuse (grinding. etc.) back and front strap wear mean little in terms of functioning, though it does affect the value. As Quentin says, check the more important wear points, or have the gun checked over by a gunsmith if possible.

There are a few rare people who's sweat can get on a gun and destroy the finish while you are standing there watching it.

Some folks sweat is highly acidic and will rust the chrome off a Harley tail-pipe if they don't wipe it off.

Had a guy working for me years ago that completely ruined the bluing on a new Model 29 S&W the first week he had just setting in front of the TV playing it.

Stuff happens!

I wouldn't let it get in the way unless you are a Luger collector and are willing to part with several grand to buy one with perfect finish.
