Was wandering thru Sportsmans Warehouse, looking for 30 Carbine ammo and saw both soft point and hollow point bullets in 110g and was wondering if either one would be a good choice for HD? Has anyone shot these thru an M-1 Carbine and have good feeding results? I'm thinking that out to 100 yds it would be an effective hunting/SD/HD round.

By my thinking, if you can get the rifle to reliably feed SP or SJHP, you'd have one dandy home-defence gun. It has good close-range power, pushing .44 mag numbers.
In my carbine, the soft lead catches on the lip of the chamber every three or four rounds. If I pull the bolt back and release it, the round goes on into the chamber. I'm looking for a 'smith who can polish that area for reliable feeding. YMMV

Loving Wifes carbine feeds FMJ, SP, and HP equally well. She keeps a 30rd mag in the well and 2 15rd mags on the buttstock. Winchester factory JHP.

I've run 110gr SP ammo from Federal and Georgia Arms through my carbine, and they've worked without any problems whatsoever. From everything I've read about them, they seem like they would be a dandy close range defense round.
That said, the only downside that I can see is that there hasn't been much in the way of terminal ballistic testing done on these loads like there has been for the more popular pistol and rifle rounds. In fact, I haven't found any test data for the soft point rounds showing expansion, penetration, and/or weight retention. Therefore, the theory that it would work well as a defense round is just that - a theory. But I wouldn't bet against it

My M-1 carbines would not feed anything but GI ball reliably.

A good expanding SP or JHP would make an M1 Carbine a very good defensive weapon, since the ballistics of the .30 M1 are similar to .357 Magnum from a rifle. However, you need to ensure that your Carbine will reliably feed your chosen load.
E.g., last year MidwayUSA had a good deal on Magtech .30 Carbine JSP, so I picked up a couple of boxes to test in my Underwood. I had several failures to feed in the 1 50-round box which I tried so far. The same day, I ran ~100 rounds of GI Ball made by Remington in the early 1950s. The Ball was noticeably hotter and function was 100%.
The other factor is whether or not a JSP or JHP actually expands. You'd think that a JSP at M1 Carbine velocities would reliably expand, but I've read that Federal JSPs don't do so reliably (anyone with contrary experience please correct me).

110 HP's work just fine out of mine. IMR4227 is your friend. Don't think I'd trust factory loads though.

Georgia Arm's 110 JSP load expands well (juding by the exit wound) on the smaller SC whitetails. Witnessed this two or three times.

The Winchester 110gr JSHP load is what Loving Wife uses. It will expand at carbine velocities.

The .30 Carbine is an okay round, however, much closer to a .357 Magnum than to a .44 Magnum. Try different SP/HP loads to see what will reliably work in your Carbine----personally, the only thing I would trust in mine are FMJ's----I wouldn't trust my life on anything else feeding reliably.

Diddo on feeding. Mine feeds jsp's with no problem and I use ww296 for powder. I've clocked them at 2000 fps so they make a formidable defense round.
