Both are too loud indoors for me to consider:eek:

Both will work though. They're both intimidating and over penetration "could" be an issue with either.

Take care of whichever platform you choose and it will be reliable enough for the one time you use it.

here's the proof of what i cited
No, it's not. The BOT only tested FMJ; Booner's posts cite the limited penetration of JHP's, which is what you'd be using in a civilian defensive AR.

If you want to compare FMJ to FMJ, .223 FMJ still has less penetration than 9mm FMJ, but FMJ is a poor choice for most HD scenarios.

Between MY Bushmaster 16" M4A3 and MY Wasr-10 GP in 7.62x39, I'd pick the M4, mainlyvbecause its lighter, shorter, and easier to manuever and handle for me (Im only 5'5", and I live in a townhouse, so rooms, stairwells, etc are tighter/narrower than in a house.Even if my ak was .223, I'd still pick the m4 (assuming it proves to be sufficiantly reliable) based on the length and weight thing. However, If I lived in a house, with no neighbors nearby, then it would be a much tougher choice, as the length of the ak would be much lese an issue, and its not like itsthat much heavier, its dead on reliable, and I do like the round better for power, so under different living conditions, its realy hard to say what I'd choose of the 2.All that said, I use a Mossber 590 with 00 buck and a S&W 637 as my HD guns.

Booner....magazine reply

Did you read my comment on the mags I am using and comments on that?

Just saw that
the ok mags if there in good shape are good to go

I have little faith in thermolds

thake your bolt carrier out of gun stand it up on the bolt face on flat surface with the bolt extended. if it slides down your gas keys are worn out.

I prefer the 5.56 X 45 to the 7.62 X 39 for a number of reasons.
I prefer the Kalashnikov to the Stoner for a number of reasons.
Both are too long for HD but I prefer an underfolder to the M4gery
I have an AR-15 A2 that is fun to play with but has never been totally reliable.
I have two Saiga conversions one in 5.56 X 45 and one in 7.62 X 51 that have always been totally reliable and quite accurate. I have a Bulgarian 5.45 X 39 that is "nice" but I'm not in love with the cartridge and the Bulgy is going bye bye tomorrow in a ftf sale.

Booner, did you mean "gas rings"?

And isn't this test only valid if the inside of the bolt carrier and the rear of the bolt, are cleaned of carbon buildup before doing this check?

I get so tired of these threads! This gets argued every other day around here. Can't we all just agree that AR's are better than AK's already!!!:what:  :neener:

i choose the ar series as i am better with them than the ak series. i have more experence with the ar platform.

AK's are good, M4s are good. But, you know whats not good? Blowing half-dollar sized holes all the way through your house and into someone else's. I would recommend possibly using something else instead, like a handgun, or just a good reliable 12 ga. At least that way you wont be fixing the interior and exterior of your house -and- the interior and exterior of someone else's.

However, if you're using ammunition that wont cause such problems, then I would see either as a good choice. Either quicker firing and smoother control, or more consistent power and reliability. Up to you.

Basically anything that will reliably take a human life will penetrate the interior, and sometimes exterior, walls of the average apartment or house. I have shot both 55 grain FMJ .223 and 123 grain FMJ 7.62 x 39mm LENGTHWISE through a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 14 x 80 singlewide mobile home that was sitting abandoned in a buddy's pasture. Both ends of the mobile home and five paneled interior walls fully penetrated.

Either the M4 or the AK will work for home defense, just be sure of your target and even more sure of whats beyond it. I like the Remington 870 12 gauge inside the house myself :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Probably shouldn't but I'm gonna toss my two cents in. Neither one. Don't wanna argue the merits of the .223 cartridge but I'm not comfortable betting my life on it at very close range ie in a home. While I'm quite fond of some of the better ar's and ak's I'd really, really hate to defend my use of one for self defense in court. You get an anti-gun prosecuting attorney who parades your "machine gun" in front of a jury who doesn't know any better and your in deep smelly stuff. I'll stick with a pistol caliber levergun or one of my shotguns. I may be paranoid but I'd hate the appearance of my firearm to get me put in the big house.

Got both

Wouldn't care either way - whichever is within reach.

I'd rather use the 12 gauge with birdshot.

There are "safety" rounds for both the .223 and the 7.62 x 39, IIRC, but if you have a shotgun...?

Then again, the pistol you carry about your person is always within reach.

yes rings my bad

no its not that is old tail. there i sno need to ever scrape or clean off the carbon the more its used the more carbon gets built up and blow off and the same cycle goes on and on

on eof test guns has over 10k down range and has never been scraped or bolt tail cleaned off.

if th erings go bad no matter what dirty or not its going to move./

If you do some research you will find that handguns and 12ga rifles can be far more dangerous to innocent bystanders than .223. And that is not with any special loadings... the vast majority of .223/5.56 loadings out there are MUCH safer for innocent bystanders than handgun rounds and self defense shotgun rounds.

An AR15 is a superior CQB weapon to any handgun. There are good reasons that agencies like the FBI/DEA are dumping MP5's and such for AR15's....

RMT, brother a few of us learned of late very few here will listen to logic and hard facts.......
