If you use a AK and the shooting is questionable, you're going to burn in criminal/civil court.

If it's a questionable shoot you are gonna burn no matter what you use.

Choosing your home defense weapon based on political correctness doesn't make much sense.

Knowing when to pull the trigger is more important than what kind of trigger it is.

I think you should be free to choose whichever option you feel the need to rationalize.

A phone, dog, bat, and a pump shotgun will be more than enough for most people.

But clearly, the AR has more class ;)

If if its legal for me to buy an M4 / Ak47, I'd take the AK.
Its simple. Because I like AKs better. When someone as asked to picture an assault weapon, chances are they think of an AK. Its big, assaulty looking, and generally would probably deter the intruder from taking another step.
Also, its cheaper and reliable. The ammo is also cheaper.
I think many people just don't like the AK because of how it looks. Its because many criminals use an AK over the M4/16 so they assume anyone with an AK is a bad guy.

I'm all for buying the meanest, most tacti-cool rifles you can legally own. However, for home defense, neither of these really make much sense (although I would take an AK over an AR-15 if I had to pick).

Disregarding overpenetatration issues, I can imagine the noise and flash would completely disorient you after the first shot.

You'd be much better off with a large handgun (full size glock, k-frame revolver etc) or a shorter shotgun (18"/20" Mossberg 590, Remington 870, etc). I think it is important to be able to hide you HD weapon and and rifle with a long mag and optics, bolt handle, etc is much harder to stash somewhere than a shotgun. A handgun is even easier to hide.

Obviously, yes, a handgun is far better than a rifle in HD, but the thread is asking about AK vs M4 in HD.
For handguns, I would probably use something smaller, no larger than a 9mm. I shot a 9mm ruger carbine before, the recoil was more than jarring my SKS. I do not look forward to shooting a gun with much more recoil than a 9mm. Anyway, I believe in quantity over power. It hardly matters what caliber when you empty a mag or two into someone. Except, perhaps the .22 (and smaller) calibers.

Not another AK vs. M4 thread!

I think I've heard somethin' like this before... no, wait, it was an argument over whether 9mm was better than .45 ACP for HD from zombie gang bangers... :neener:

Alexd Why is it harder. cause of a magazine......Not true, nice thought though. MY M-4 sits in the same spot as my 870 did. handgun goes on person , long guns go in safe room.

M4

Well I am concerned only with select fire version of M4.

Semi auto does have any value where I live.

He holds it this way because that's how it came out of the box.

I visited Clyde Armory yesterday and put money down on a Colt LE 6920

Booner, what was the purpose of posting those pics?

Seriously, I have no idea, and there wasn't really any text to go with. Not trying to be confrontational, just trying to get information into my brainmeats. :)

I think it shows that this idea of handguns being more maneuverable, or smaller, to be nonsense. In real use the "personal space" taken up by a carbine and handgun are the same.

Note that the muzzle of both handgun and carbine touch the target when the operator is standing in the same spot, when in firing position.

That's what it tells me anyway.

Firepower.....

you use both run both what runs more reliable and give's you MOA (minute of A$%HO&E) accuracy to do what you need. that is what you go with .. since your region is heavy with ak's and its family go with that.

TR hit it on the money

There are other shooting retention postions we use that shorten up the carbine even more but we wont show those.....

But you can a pistol from a retention position and use less space.

Still, not as much power or capacity, and personally, I can hit what I want with a rifle with a lot less concentration on aiming and/or trigger control, than I can with a pistol. I'm guessing when it counts, that's an important benefit.

We cross posted but I can't imagine a rifle retention position that uses less space than a pistol? The rifle also takes up more verticle space, right?

NO SEMI AUTO comparison please. THe question is for select fire weapons.

If you read and believe the conventional wisdom you will find that select fire is rarely if ever recommended for defensive use and then only for suppressive fire unless you are talking SMG style weapons and you didn't ask about those.

Just because the weapon has that happy switch does not mean there will be occasion to use it.

You say you want a weapon for defensive use in hostile territory so I can assume your supply line is basically what you can carry with you.

Full auto will deplete your stock pretty quickly, you're better served by not worrying about that ability too much.

And all that with a 16" barrel. Try it with an SBR with folding stock and see what you get, works even better.

Ok you are correct barb,

I will show it to you...I learned it as well but wont teach it in open classes that much unless there very advanced students

Oh to heck with it.... ill post it

guys, please dont try this at home without proper training in this tactic

Mind you this picture isnt mine....... as this is the only picture of the postion i can find,
the bolts had been removed and all ammo was off the playing field and such
