I was at a recent gun show and perusing the rifle section when I happened upon the Smith & Wesson MP 15 AR rifle. I have shot AK 47 and M 16's once before, but had never really considered an AR before seeing this gun. My question is, would this be a good foundation gun for the AR platform? I don't have a lot of money to spend on military styled firearms, so this might be my only AR purchase. Is the Smith worthy?

Also, what degree of accuracy might one be able to achieve with this gun?

The only complaint I have with the Smith's is that they will not accept PMags.
Other than that, they are fine rifles. Plus I think Smith has a deal if you buy a MP-15 you can get a Sigma for $99 or $50 I can't remember how much, but it was super cheap. Granted the original Sigma's were bad, the new ones are much much better.

they were asking almost 1,100. I dont't know a lot about AR's in general, so if there is a cheaper way to go and still get the same level of reliability, I would certainly be interested.

I looked hard at both the Smith and Stag Arms.
From all I could read and with input from this forum and having shot both - I went with the Stag model #2.
It was more gun for the money and Stag has a lifetime warranty - not (1) year for the Smith.
But keep in mind that I am in NY which still enforces clinton ban

To do direct AR comparisons this is a good link:

Please at least post what state you're in

if you want more replies (and don't make folks dig to find it-many won't)-can't begin to tell you how many posts I don't bother to reply to as I have no idea whether the info I have would do someone any good.

I ran across a good deal on some Colt LE6920's (not that you'd be interested), but since I don't know where you are...

Please look up the word perusing. Got a lecture from my lawyer neighbor about that very same word 1 week ago.

Don't believe this is an issue any more. My 8-month old 15PC accepts them , no problem.

Basic: Can you provide details on the Colts!?

I have a M&P-15 and several Pmags and have no problem. I believe there was a problem of some out of spec mag wells on some rifles so they would not drop free but that was fixed.

Once again I disagree, mine works them fine. I love mine, if you have the patience wait until SW does another promotion. I paid 850 for mine and got a 100 rebate. Can't beat it for 750.

Well, it may be too late as he only got 10 of 'em in, and when I bought mine it was down to 7, but the LE6920 is/was on sale at Town Police Supply/Town Gun Shop in Collinsville VA. He says his regular price is $1700+ (too damn high) but he's selling all 10 of 'em at $1224, which is pretty damn good. I've found slightly cheaper prices on the 'Net, but of course nobody had 'em in stock.

I bought a RRA when the AWB expired, and the LE6920 Colt looks identical, but has a 4 position stock (vs 6 position/RRA) and has a standard grip (vs Hogue/RRA).

Didn't really need another AR, but at that price for a Colt?
BTW-don't know where you are in the Shenandoah Valley, but if you check Town's site I believe they also have a store in Richmond VA. If you're closer to them, maybe they have the same deal?

Town in Collinsville tends to be on the high side, but he does run some good sales.

'Course, I'm sure you know about the sites comparing the various models of ARs? If not:

(just don't get too hung up on The Chart!)
And finally, the infamous DEA article which many seem to love to hate:

Hey...they're all on the 'Net, so you pick which ones you wanna believe! :D
