I live in Southwest Florida and concealment is a problem due to the light clothing necessary in this climate.
I purchased a S&W M&P 340 CT and I love it.
I carry it in a Mikka square pocket holster, and I carry it everywhere I go.
Prior to purchasing this gun, I often did not carry because of the difficulty in concealing larger weapons.
I assume that a very small percentage of the people in the US with concealed carry licenses, will ever have to use their carry weapon to defend themselves, but, a weapon left at home defends no one outside of that home.
The 340 obviates this situation.
At the range at which I understand most assaults are initiated, I believe that the 340 should provide adequate protection.

Nobody on this thread likes their 340 any more than I like mine, but let's slow down the 340 love train here...
If I wasn't going to carry it, I would not own it at 1/2 the price! If for some reason I did own it, I would leave it in the safe. This is a CARRY gun. Please, 8200, for your own sake, find one of these, or a 340PD at a range to rent.
As a range toy, as you put it, the M&P340 is a horrible, horrible gun. There are guns that are as reliable, but cheaper, more accurate (just based on sight radius), and a MILLION percent more enjoyable to shoot.

OK, I will try to talk you out of it.

Buy the 3" 686 first.
I want to replace my 65 with one
because I've owned a 686.
(4" barrel was just too front heavy for me.)
Much more practical gun,
especially for those w/o ccw.
Then, buy an MP340.
If I had hundreds burning a hole in my pocket
(which I don't), first I'd go for the 3" 686.
Then, I'd add the 340.
But then, I'm happy with
a .38 spl air weight for light weight duty.
I really only want a 340 for the extra quality,
not for the .357 mag.
Just my 2c.
Carry permit or not, I was eventually planning on getting 442 to satisfy my craving for a snub nose.
But, the M&P 340 gives you a far superior tritium front sight, a clear/crisp rear U-notch, better finish and the ability to use 135 gr. Gold Dots at 1000 fps (.357 GDHP-SB) vs. 860 fps (.38 +P GDHP-SB)... all for ~ $250 more.
The M&P 340 will be a gift to myself when I get a carry permit... someday.

I have had to put aside my 340PD as I do not have a CCW, this does not mean that it is for sale or that it sits in the safe I take it to the range just to watch people wounder how I could hit the target at 15yards (2.5" groups) with "that little thing".

340 Scratch Opinion
Finally got me a 340 and have put about 60 or so rounds thru it, but after my last range trip I noticed a scratch below where the cylinder opens. I 've seen this mentioned on this thread before but not alot said about it. You think I should worry about this? Anyone else have this scratch? What would cause this? Thanks for any input, pics are attached

I've got that scratch on mine. I believe it is caused when you have ammunition in the cylinder, then you open the cylinder and spin it or move it and the ammunition rubs against that piece. I of course could be wrong but, it doesn't bother me much.

I have examined my 340 closely and I do not have any scratches below where the cylinder opens .

As opposed to a scratch, which I would attribute to an accidental encounter with an object that removes the DLC inadvertantly I would consider what you are observing as a drag mark or use beauty mark.
The extractor rod is dragging along the frame while the cylinder is being opened or closed. Note that the extractor is spring loaded allowing it to travel its path fully along the frame creating that travel mark.
It is particularly notable on blue or black coatings. The stainless and aluminum revolvers I have look the same, it is just not as dominant.
Normal wear and tear. I have it on my 340 as-well. To avoid in the future, purchase NIB 340, never open cylinder.

I found this thread after googling S&W MP 340, I purchased mine last week, put 100 rounds through it. It shot great, this is my first S&W. It retailed for $550 and it wears the Hogue monogrip. I traded in a Rossi 971 that had been my car gun, in Louisiana you can carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle as the vehicle is considered an extension of your home. My S&W will be my new car gun.
My wife bought it for me as a birthday gift, she's a keeper.

In answer to bigsid's scratch question - what you observing is a normal wear of the black finish on a plate that is attached to the bottom of the frame. A similar plate is attached to the top of the frame by the forcing cone - only the one on top is in "white" to begin with and the one at the bottom is finished black together with the rest of the gun.
This wear mark is resulted from the cylinder edge rubbing against it when it is opened. If you open the cylinder and push it slightly to the back you will see exactly where it makes that mark. It has nothing to do with extractor as DAdams wanted to suggest as the extractor does not have large enough diameter to touch that part of the frame. It is the edge of the cylinder, easily reproducible as I indicated above and quite normal.

Guess I am missing something then and not seeing the line being referred to to by you Mr. Mecenas.
Perhaps someone adept with Photoshop could do some "pointing", bigsid could you be more specific please.
The only scratch made on mine through normal mechanical contact is where the extractor rod, which is springloaded and rides the frame on its way in and out. I have no wear at the 45 degree angle where the base and back of the frame are formed.
I will put it another way, I have no wear from any contact from cylinder to frame. I have only about 200 rounds through it though.
