For what its worth, I had problems with my MP340 as shown in earlier posts. After two returns back to SW, they sent me a new MP340 and so far so good.
I would call SW customer service asap as they are very good in responding to you problems. My concern still is that as much as I like the MP340, I still am concerned that it might not work when needed especially if you ccw daily. Good Luck
 
I just saw your other post. They are closed until Monday. I have several S&W's and never had an issue. Glad to hear that their customer service is good. I am kinda like you. Not sure I will trust it and that's a bummer as much as I paid for it and also since I bought it specifically for carry.

Will keep y'all posted.
 
Buying M&P 340 CT - Suggestions?

I'm going to buy a new M&P 340 CT and thought I'd ask you guys if you have any pointers on what to look out for (possible defects, etc.) before plunking down the money for it.

Also, any thoughts on where to buy or what a good price would be? I'm in Houston, Texas, if that helps.

Shortbus, Your experience sounds like mine. My 340, which is currently at S&W, will not fire but the cylinder rotates. Mine broke in the first range session after firing a couple of 357's.

I bought mine to carry and now am wondering if I made the right choice. I will never have faith in it again. Once it comes back I intend to run hundreds of 357's through it until I have regained confidence in it or it breaks again.
 
Sounds to me like dumping my M&P in favor of the Bodyguard might have been a sound move.
 
M&P 340 v. bodyguard

Have both, carry both. I have had a couple of bodyguards Mod 38 and 649 for a lot of years. Both are pre lock. Both have never failed me.

I purchased the M&P 340 several months ago. It has CT grips and that has been a great asset. I have only fired a few hundred rounds of 38 spl and 100 rounds of .357 through it. To date I have had no problems with failures at all.

It is my custom to carry 38 spl rather then .357. I also seldom used .357 in the 66 that that I carried in uniform for several years. That was department policy and my preference.

I am concerned about M&P 340 reports of failures. I like the weight, feel, internal hammer and CT grips. I a getting old and the light weight appeals to me more every day.

The internal lock is a waste and something else to go wrong. A pair of cuffs or flex tie would be more secure and not make me worry when I am carrying it.

I will shoot it a lot more before depending on it is my pocket as the only backup I carry.

Unfortunately M&P 340s all have locks. There are current 642s w/o locks, and J Frame replicas (lemon squeezer) without.
 
I dont wanna sound like a sissy, but the range was all out of .38 ammo and I didn't wanna go to walmart so I shot a box of black hills hollow points, it was accurate for the first few rounds but I shot all over from 45-50 rounds due to pulling the gun anticipating the recoil. Im glad this gun is for ccw and not plinking.

Austin dude,
houston and austin usually has gun shows every other month. check out "the gun zone" or ajcsports they have the best prices on the little cannon. i got mine at the fort worth gun show for about $629.
VERY GOOD CHOICE FOR CCW. you'll love it even more during the houston summer months! LOL!!!

I considered that, but in the end I realized that the M&P would just sit in my safe, and to me snubnoses are working guns. Really, all that set the M&P apart was the ability to shoot .357, and that was something that I wouldn't be doing. I do like the sights, and the slightly less weight, but that wasn't enough. Plus, the trigger on my Bodyguard is considerably better than the M&P, and I do like the ability to shoot SA with the Bodyguard. It had to be an either/or decsion with the two guns, and believe me, it wasn't an easy decision to get rid of the M&P. While I prefer the Bodyguard the M&P is still a fine gun. That said, I never considered getting rid of of the Bodyguard with the only real decision being whether to keep both.

Still, with issues regarding shooting .357, the M&P looses some of it's relevancy if the gun is limited to +P.
 
Issues ?

Long time reader...first time writer

Got my new 340 today. I was shooting 38 +Ps and after the first eight shots, it stopped firing. The cylinder would turn but not fire. After empting the rounds and "playing" with it a little, it started working again. Then I shot two or thre more and it did it again but soon fixed its self. After the second time I shot 100 rds thru and no more problems. I read most of the past threads and found that some guys have the same problems that they had to send it. What do u guys think...send in or keep shooting.

By the way the gun shot awesome....45 rds ..ranging from 3-25 yards (see target)

When it broke did the trigger still pull or was it locked? My trigger still pulled but it wouldn't engage the hammer and wouldn't spin the cylinder. I am still waiting for the label from Smith to send it back. If I were you I'd send it back because it's starting to seem that these aren't isolated problems with the 340 M&P. Just my .02.
 
Matt S, I would send it in for tuning. For the price you pay, and for what the product is supposed to be, it should go bang every time you pull the trigger when it's loaded. Plus there's the negative self-defense aspect of having a gun that doesn't work.
 
Cylinder finish...

I'm curious about the Ionbond (Black-T) finish on the 340 night guard cylinders. I've heard great things about this finish. How does this stuff hold up on the 340 cylinder? Is it as good as advertised? According to Springer precision, the stuff is unbelieveably tough: "...The DIAMONDBLACK Ionbond finish is 1500-2000 HV. Typical hard chrome finishes are generally 1050 HV and melonite is in the 700 HV range. As you can see, the DIAMONDBLACK Ionbond finish is .5 – 2.5 times harder than common “tough” finishes..."

I'm thinking of sending one of my revolvers in for refinishing. I've been toying with the idea of getting it refinished with Ionbond. As much as I like stainless revolvers, I am beginning like the idea of having a black revolver.

When the helicopters come and the door flies open and enter they who come in the night..... will be looking for the folks with the black guns. Stick with stainless. ;)

But seriously, I am going on 2 years with my 340, holster wear (kind of a shine) only, I have not dropped it, taken it to a desert sandstorm or to the coast for a saltwater fishing trip. It looks like the day I bought it. No scratches or wear down. Same holds true for my Kahr PM 9 with the same finish.
 
Update. Just got the M&P back. The repair sheet stated the following.

Repaired : No Repair Necessary
Repaired: Clean Gun

I had only fired 9 rounds thru it so I knew it couldn't have been that dirty. I called S&W and their service department said that the descriptions are sometimes very generic and it could have been that a piece of brass or some other debris got into the gun somehow. I still want to use it as a carry piece but not until a run a couple 100 rounds thru it to get some confidence back.

If it makes u feel any better. I kept shooting mine and after my first problem, i had no further problems. Have shot about 500 rds thru now with no more issues.

I feel the same way as u, Im using it as a backup on duty. Won't carry as this until I feel 100%.


By the way...anybody out there have a good ankle holster to sell or does anyone recommend one that has real good retention (running etc..)
 
Glad to see the 340 thread resurface.

How are you folks making out that have had issues and sent your M$P back for warranty repairs?
 
Im curious as well, I havent had a issue with mine as I only have 50 rounds through it.

Im thinking about having my cylinder machined for moonclips http://www.tkcustom.com/
I know the cylinder will not be warrantied, but will I lose the rest of the gun as well? By the way Jerry Miculek (the S&W Revolver Competition Shooter ) uses moonclips on his revolvers, So i'd hope it would be covered.
 
Interesting... Moon clips are what makes my 325 into the fighting revolver it is. I wonder if there is a downside to machining such a small weapon for moon clips. Aside from warranty voiding, does anybody see a downside here?
 
what a difference!

just installed my new pac grip. and ran about 50 rounds of rem. 357 on it.
night and day! it really absorbs the big bite of a 357 kaboom.
not much difference on the concealability of the weapon. it still disappears on my 180 lbs. frame.
great feel. great grip. overall a great addition to my CCW!
