My 340 M&P went back to S&W for the cylinder freezing up. It got to where I couldn't even pull the trigger through it's stroke.

Ammo to go has a pretty good selection right now and the prices are seemingly not much more than a year ago. The fact of the matter is at least they have some inventory and good variety...at least tonight. By the time I pay 9.7 percent sales tax it is about the same as the shipping. I can't find any of this "good stuff" ie PD around here.
For those of you looking to try some .357 Speer Gold Dot For Short Barrel in 135 gr + P they actually have it. They also have .38 spl +P SGDFSB, which many carry in their X4X J Frames.
I picked up some 50 packs of Remington 9mm Golden Saber 147 gr for a good price and.....a box of the ever elusive .300 Savage for my 99E.

Will do... They never do tell you much.I've settled on Remington Golden Sabre .357 as a carry load. Shoots real nice out of the 340. Tolerable recoil, and better-than-.38 ballistics. Nice balance for this wheelgun IMO.
+1 on ammo 2 go. Good service and prices. I order quite a bit of ammo from them.

A Couple of Questions
Don't have the time to research at the moment, what gr on the RGS .357 you carrying?
ATG is backed up about two weeks on delivery, that's ok unless something breaks out.
When I do my range qualification for the TN CCA, I am going to see if they will let me use the 340 for short range the the 686 for the 15 yard stuff, just to get some more rounds through the 340 I think I stopped somwhere around 250 rounds with no issues so I loaded it up with the SGDFSB and there for the Grace of God go I. Clinging to my gun and my bible.

That'd be 125gr...
Last time I checked it was pretty cheap at ATG... Much cheaper than .357 Gold Dots or DPX.

Wow, FAST repair service from S&W! Sent the 340 Monday, and got it back Friday.
Cryptic note reads : "Customer complaint: end shake & cylinder cramping. Repaired yoke"
The trigger stroke feels very nice now.

I just ordered 500 rounds of .38 special for 132.95 and 500 rounds of 45 at 174.95 for my kimber when it arrives. I saved somewhere around 14 cents for 38 and 28 cents for 45(per round). Thanks "DAdams" for posting, I thought I'd have to order from cabelas.

Bought my M&P340 after lurking on this thread for quite a while. A Crimson Trace 405 came after I took the photo. The input on this forum provided me with valuable information (warts and all). Thanks!
Guys, I thought i'd get the 340 for backup, protection and a little bit of everything. It fits my hand and is small enough to take anywhere. I do have a few questions though.
I have decided that the regular M&P 340 is the one to get because I like the night sight on it. Was gonna get the laser but the gun at S&W said it's pretty useless as it's hard to find that dot in an emergency situation.
Also, I asked about the moon clips (that someone mentioned here) and was told that it will only void the warranty on the cylinder if you do the moon clip mod which by the way seemed to be a cool as hell mod.
Anyway, my hands are pretty wide and my fingers short which is why I need something with a small grip. The standard grip is too short for me but the Crimson Trace LG-305 grip with the laser is a much better fit. However, I feel I could use just a little longer grip. Is anything else out there that would fit?
Also, my local dealer gave me a price of $690 plust tax I assume. I would like to support her because she's bought stuff from me but would still like to know what the lowest price out there is.

Also, what's the absolutely hottest load out there that the gun will safely handle for say Bear (emergency and not hunting) and is there something that will penetrate a bear skull?
By the way, Ruger just came out with a Polymer revolver in .38

Go to CTs web site and order the free DVD.
Bear skull? Pehaps the small guys like we have here in TN. Brown, Kodiak, Griz...note to self, get .45-70 copilot rifle.
Go to the Buffalo Bore website and read up on their .357 offerings. There are no restrictions on commercial .357 loads for the 340

S&W may install a longer barrel for you. If not, sell it and buy a different one.
If I may, I will suggest a completely different revolver for bear protection. Besides, I cannot imagine shooting a Buffalo Bore round out of a Scandium J-frame. How well could you shoot that little gun, with those BB loads, while in an awkward field position (think backpeddling or even being on your back)? How about one-handed? It's something to think about, IMHO.

I have CT 405s on my 340 and they are a decent grip, (not great) but with the laser and correct size for my pocket carry purposes, they serve my adequately.
Do indeed try the Hogue Monogrips on a 340 or other frame size. I have them also on my 686. Lots of grip to get hold of, non slip rubber material, great padding for recoil reduction.

If you do try this round you may find the crimp jump locks it up. Think I would stick with something a bit lighter. As you read down, you see the caveats about the .357 load in something lighter than 16 ounces.
If you get the gun, pick up some .357 and give them a try, see if you can tolerate the recoil and if the gun jumps crimp.
Perhaps others can comment on their .357 experience.

Thanks guys. First, the bear comment was just that, a comment. I plan on one day getting some property up north but first of all,that's very iffy and second, I guess IF it happens and there IS bear around there, I can just get another gone so no worries there. I prefer something small and without a hammer but that still packs a punch.

Neat fix for black touch-up
I've read a number of comments on this thread about actually putting a scratch on that diamond black finish. While taking the cylinder off my 340 I (gasp!)
nicked the screw head. Nasty white spot! I had an old bottle of a product made by Birchwood Casey called "Brass Black" that I thought I'd give a try. the stuff blackened the screw head nicely, so I thought, why not see what it does to a tiny blem on the gun itself. Wonder of wonders, it covered the spot and blended right in. If you have a mark on that tough finish, give Brass Black a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

As soon as you get into the longer barrels you tend to get into the stainless and blue steel revolvers and the weight goes up quickly...not that there is anything wrong with that.
I think you will find that most 340 and pd series owners like the J Frame Centennial but wanted something lighter for pocket carry.

At any rate, I can live with and do train with the the pinky under grip.

After trying a Glock 27, 26, Sig P239, PX4 Storm SC, I have now settled on an HK P2000SK DA/SA 9mm.
I carry it in a CTAC and really, really like it, but I still pocket carry the 340 much more often!
I miss THR, but a new job just keeps me hopping... I read it from time to time on my Blackberry, but posting is a pain!
