Thanks for the reply I just pulled the trigger on one at gunbroker.com. I just got tired trying to track one down. I was spending way to much time and the Mrs. gave me the the go ahead and spend the extra money. So I ended up paying way to much but at least I have the gun I want. I should have it by the end of next week.

Again thanks for the reply.

No problem - enjoy it. if you ever consider laser grips, I would stick to the 405's. they are a midge smaller then the 3045's. I have been pocket carrying with the 305's and I can fool my wife and kid, but I'm not 100% confident. I can safely say I'm as confident concealing the M&P340 with the 305's as if I were CC the 9c IWB or in a high ride scabbard. That said, I would rather the smaller 105's or 405's. Hope this helps. I guess my angst is that I live in the center of lib central here in NY....
Be well.

The S&W CT grips are the 405s--e.g., the 'deluxe' boot grip with a recoil pocket.

For more info about j-frame CTs, see this thread and follow the links....

Best online price Crimson Trace 305's???

Hey guys,

It's been a while since I've been on here and I'm a little lazy to go back through everything so I'll just ask for suggestions.

I picked up a model 640 to use as a belt gun while I use the 340 with other concealed carry methods. I've got the factory 405's on the 340 for concealment but want to put some 305's on the 640 for better control. Concealment isn't much of an issue in a canted belt holster so I can go for CT's that give me a full 3 finger grip.

Anyway - where's my absolute best source for online purchase of the 305's?

I got the 305's from the s&w shooting sports center for $229. The manager gave 20% off. I had purchased the M&P340 without the CT grips and the price he gave for the CT's sweetened the deal. If you call just remember these 7 words... Is this the best you can do? Hope this helps.. the number is above..

I shot the gun again today with 25 38's and 25 357's, finishing up with 25 more 38's. The laser was way off but the factory sights were deadly. I shot respectable groups, even with the 357 loads which seemed more brutal than usual. I just hung on to the the gun as if I have a pit bull by the ears. the ammo was the generic winchester target loads - 124's?

I adjusted the laser tonight and may sneak over to the range tomorrow to test it out.

Thanks guys!

I went with Shooter's Supply.

I'm looking forward to shooting them on my heavier J frame as compared to the 405's on the 340 M&P.

Great! IMHO there's not much more printing with the 305's as compared to the stock S&W grips for the 340. While I don't usuallt wear jeans, the gun with the 305s pocket carries reasonably well in carharts. If you ever try a swap and try the 305's on the M&P 340, let me know what you think. Have a good day...

mod 340 trigger compared to old Mod 38

Today I was shooting my 340 M&P and my model 38. The mod 340 only has about 200 rounds through it. The Mod 38 is about 15 years old and has been shot little but carried a lot.

The trigger on the mod 38 is much better than the mod 340. The 340 trigger seems rough. The mod 38 seems to stage better.

Is that a function that the mod 340 has not been fired much or is that roughness characterist of the 340?

Thanks

New to the club...

Hey guys,

I was really glad to find this thread. I've been researching and thinking about buying an M&P 340 for a while, and this thread confirms a lot of the information I've found.

I just ordered an M&P 340 CT the end of last week (through GT Distributors in Austin, TX). Not sure yet how long it will take to get it...

I grew up hunting, fishing and shooting. My dad and grandfather taught us about handling guns from the time we were very small. And ever since I was about ten years old I've had a love for 357 magnums which started with my dad's Ruger Blackhawk 357 mag... : )

I've had my CHL for about 9 years (just took my second renewal). Up until recently I carried a Glock 357 Sig sub-compact (I am a HUGE fan of the 357 Sig semi-auto round! I keep this pistol in my Jeep). But the reality of the gun's size and weight and the typical temperatures here in central Texas have combined to cause me to very seldom carry on my person.

I started looking into snubbies a while back and ended up purchasing a S&W 640-1 all stainless. I love that gun. Shooting 38 +Ps is a pleasure, and shooting 357 Mags is a BLAST! As I mentioned I love 357 magnums. This is my current carry piece, but it is very heavy (I believe 25 oz empty). And that's what got me looking into the 340...

I own the following:
S&W 422 (22 long rifle semi-auto pistol)
S&W 640-1 (357 mag revolver)
Glock 26 (9mm sub-compact semi-auto pistol)
Glock 33 (357 Sig sub-compact semi-auto pistol)
Glock 30 (45 sub-compact semi-auto pistol)
Springfield TRP Operator (1911 style 45 semi-auto pistol)

and soon... the S&W M&P 340 CT! I can't wait...

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. I'm looking forward to sharing my experience first time out with the 340...

I finally got my M&P 340 C/T Saturday and put 100 rounds through it. Can’t wait to go the range and shoot it some more.

Alright can some one point in the right direction for a OWB holster for the 340. This would be for concealment and open carry. Websites, model and make would be great!

Thanks,

C.C.

Can't believe you guys are still discussing this silly little revolver over here.

Only kidding, only kidding. I want one.

Just checking in to request that the MSAA of
a lesser caliber snub club check in at
the alt campus when you get time.

What? That makes no sense? Never mind. :scrutiny:
Just ignore it. Nothing to see here. Carry on.

No really, I do want an M&P 340.
I will own one someday.

OWB holster for the 340

My $.02 worth on a OWB holster for the 340...

I use a Galco small of back holster for my 640 and plan to use the same thing for my 340. It's not cheap (averaging around $80), but it is a very nice holster that should last a very long time.

I wear mine to the right side between 3 and 5 o'clock.

Hey CC... I ordered and received a Backhawk 420800BK from Tactical.com. Its based off an old design (there s a thread describing the holster and a link to a article on the holster that you should read). It's a really beautiful holster, leather OWB, great retention, light weight made in Italy. It was $35 plus shipping. I suggest that you look into it. I would like some ideas on a IWB for the 340.. I have ordered a MIKA's square cut pocket, and current am using a nemesis from desantis. I have no regrets with any of my purchases so far. If I find the thread again, I'll see if I could post it here. It's in revolvers. I hope that this helps. Frisco

a number of us have shot all kinds of ammo

in our M&P340s--much of it reloads built around two particular parameters:

1. Ammo that replicates the "Gold Dot Short Barrel" ammo with 135-gr. JHPs--a 38+P load running at 850+ fps, or a 357 Magnum load running at just under 1000 fps.

2. Ammo that replicates the nominal "FBI load"--a 38+P load with a 158-gr. LSWC-HP running above 800 fps.

3. We've also begun working on loads with the lighter-weight bullets, but AFAIK, we have no well-tested (re)loading data for the 110-125-gr. bullet range.

When I started shooting my 340, I used the FC 38 Special standard-pressure 110-gr. round--it was all I could tolerate at the time. As my hand became more conditioned, I moved on up to 'bigger rounds.' My current favorite reload is a 357 build running a 158LSWC at about 900 fps--which is a round not available in factory ammo, AFAIK.

Based on these experiences, personally I do NOT care for the lighter-weight-bullet loads--yes, they do have less recoil, but the "suddenness" of the recoil is more unpleasant to me than the "fuller push" of the slower, heavier-bullet rounds. The point is this: Competent performance out of these 2" lightweights depends on many subjective factors; be sure to consider other factors besides bullet weight.

FWIW, good basic performance criteria for shooting these guns are based on Old Fuffs "quad five" drill.

1. Five yards
2. five inch group
3. five shots
4. five seconds.

Select an ammo that will (eventually) allow you to do this. As an aside, at the cost of PD ammo today--perhaps $1.20 per round, if you can even find it, I understand--you might want to consider reloading, but that's another issue.

Marvin Knox: I really enjoy my 305 CTs on my 3" 60--it would be my bedside gun were it not for the five shot capacity. However, two years after purchase, the laser dimmed--so CT will have to send out another set, I guess.

Baxtereyes: I concur with your description of the M&P 340 trigger pull. It may make you feel better to know that, sampling issues aside, it is better than the aluminum-framed / cheaper lightweights. After about 2000 rounds through mine, it has cleaned up quite a bit. And, after nominally 18,000 rounds through my 640, the trigger is a dream come true. Both of these guns, BTW, had an iniital 'smoothing-only' action job done by my gunsmith. Finally, the 360 I added last fall has had the best "factory" trigger in a lightweight I've shot.

angel, Marvin - I tried the Federal Low Recoil .357 load (2 rounds) and went back to the previously mentioned .38 Special loads. Recoil was terrible and recovery very slow. The Special loads (IMHO) work much better.

I've never tried the Federal "low recoil" myself. But I have heard before, from other sources, that the low recoil handle seem to be a little bit of false advertising to their way of thinking. Sounds like you agree.

None of the magnum rounds are exactly pleasant in the 340's. But I have found the DPX and the Speer Short Barrel to be OK, if not quick, for recovering between shots. I'll continue to use the DPX.

I usually will reach for my 640 first and the 340 only for back up when carrying under a sport coat. The 640 handles most stuff quite well, it being a little heavier than the 340M&P and having the larger CT305 grips as well.

Unbelievable isn't it?

Almost 1000 posts and 100K views.
OK, let's put this baby over the top. Here's 998. Who's got 999?

DA, get your speech ready for 1000 or 1001.
(Remember the good old days of fiVe making speeches in the 642 Club when we set some record?)

And good to see some sensibility in discussions about ammo. I like jfh's wisdom in 994.

Just because it's chambered for .357 mag doesn't mean you have to shoot .357 mag in it.

how's the federal hydra shock low recoil 357 mag?

Not bad if you're all about self-abuse. I have a package that's minus two rounds sitting on top of the gun safe; saving them for a more beefy .357 revolver than the 340.

I've had great luck with the Speer low recoil .357 rounds. No crimp-jumping, much more manageable recoil, and a hair over .38 +P. When I have the time/dedicated space for reloading I'm planning on taking a hard look at a wadcutter like jfh has.

Edited to add: Break out the champagne and party like it's post 999!

Just picked mine up. I'm selecting ammo on a few simple criteria (I have about 5 sample boxes).
Penetration (minimum 10 inches in a flesh simulator)
Best (most reliable AND final diameter) expansion
MUST be able to fire 10 rounds accurately. If the flinch starts creeping in, it's out.
I'm POSITIVE the best ballistics can be had from .357, but it's no good if I can't put up a fight because I'm too busy bringing the gun back on target from over my head due to recoil.

1,000!!!! Take that, sub-1,000 post threads!
