BSA1, I figure that's likely (shooting the gun may loosen things up.)

Just not ready to try that in my living room.

That's also why I have not tried inserting the mag on an open bolt, then hitting the bolt release. I don't handle chambered-round guns at home before I've actually gotten well-familiar with them at the range.
 
Agree with unlimited and mrclean.

Although loading a full mag with the bolt to the rear then hitting the mag release is the preferred way per post #19, there is one instance when it becomes necessary to load the mag against a closed bolt. That's with a "tactical reload." That's when there is a break in the fight and you have a chance to dump your mag that's short X number of rounds and replace it with a full mag (if you have one!), giving you more firepower. So it is important to be able to load a full mag against a closed bolt.
