Happily for Smith & Wesson, a hoard of gunwriters will repeat the mantra of "you can't cheap out when your life is on the line". This will justify paying twelve to seventeen hundred dollars for a rifle that S&W doesn't even manufacture themselves.

Basic Bushmaster: $700-900
Basic DPMS: $600-800

For the same design with the same features, how can you justify paying more?

So, what you're saying is that because the design is the same, a $350 Llama 1911 is equal in quality to a $2,000 Ed Brown? :scrutiny:

Execution, quality of materials, quality control and specs mean more than design....and lo and behold companies who build to a better standard seem to charge more. Shocking.

As was pointed out earlier, they are buying a rifle plus training plus service contracts plus a whole line of other S&W gear. The extra 500-1000 dollars per patrol rifle may seem like chump change compared to all the other economies they get from going completely to S&W.

What problems, exactly, does a DPMS have? I've heard a few vague things, but have never really heard any specifics.

Oh boy! yet another mousegun <YAWN>

[Sarcasm OFF]

I believe that the preferred term is "poodleshooter", whereas "mousegun" refers to a .25 or .32 pocket pistol.
