This is generally directed toward all the 'smiths out there.

Now that CMP has finished their second run of carbines, I'm just curious:

Have the inevitable "Can you convert my new M1 carbine to :)what:insert any high pressure belted magnum cartridge here:what:)" started yet?

Can you convert a M1 for 10mm? That would be a good anti-griz hunting gun...

I looked into converting to .357mag it can be done .........but the amount of work and parts would cost lots of $$$$$$.

Ron James M!~"Carbines have been converted to at least .45 Magnum"

Were those cartridges made with the reverse bottle neck, in which the bullet is larger than the base of the case?

I'd love to find someone (good) who makes the 5.7 MMJ carbine conversion, it's sort of a rimless Hornet for a autoloader. When I bought my carbine it was commonly being done but my three little girls always needed new shoes and teeth fixed and school materials, etc. When I could finally feel justified in getting my little rifle changed over, it wasn't being done anymore! Ah, well...the kids made nice grown-up ladies anyway.

In fact, the husband of the older was confirmed as a US Ckt. Court Judge yesterday and I got to see the vote on C-Span 2! He has his head on straight - for a son-in-law - and knows what the 2nd Ammendment is about. (Irrelivant plug for my "kids", just had to share it 'cause I'm proud of them!)

I had an M1 Carbine converted to .338 Lapua Magnum. I used it while on Safari in Kenya where I killed an elephant and a rhino with the same bullet. Then, on the drive back to the airport in Nairobi, a polar bear (Yes, a polar bear!) jumped in front of our Land Cruiser, so I had to take it down with that same M1 Carbine. The pilot of the plane that took us back to the States heard about my superb hunting skills (skillz) so he let me be a sky marshal on the way back. Good thing too, because Bin Laden himself was on the plane. I fired at him but the bullet went through his shoulder and out the back, piercing the fuselage of the plane! This created a HUGE hole in the side of the aircraft which sucked Bin Laden out, along with my beloved M1 Carbine in .338 Lapua Magnum. Both now reside at the bottom of the Atlantic.

True story.

We've don this within the last week or ten days.

Yes there was a guy converting M-1s to .451 Magnum or some .45 magnum. IIRC it used only 15 round GI mags which only held seven or eight rounds in this use.

I also mentioned the IJ 9mm M-1 Carbine

I also talked about a conversion where cut down .223 cases were used with .357 loads and a companion N frame S&W was cut to allow the use of moon clips with the same cartridge. As the IJ 9x17 mm Crbine required basically the same boly face and carbine magazines allow a longer overall length than the IJ's modified Browning P35 magazines this seemed very do able to me.

We also discussed a little on the 5.7 Spitfire Johnson cartridge and its varient.

I have heard of Carbines being converted to use .38 Special as well.

Me, I would be happy with a clean Caliber .30 US Carbine M-1.

When I was working for a magazine I got in a Stainless carbine or brushed nickled carbine but lost the job before I got to shoot it.It had a plastic pistol grip stock that actually felt decent dry firing the carbine. Seemed to be a good idea for a boat gun back when pleasure boats were disappearing in Florida waters a couple of decades or so ago. I seem to recall it was an IJ much like one I had recommended to someone a few years earlier for just that purpose. Having used a carbine in combat the guy was thrilled with the idea of a salt water proof (sort of) Carbine and he felt the original cartridge just fine for the purpose.

I would have loved to see that model made for the Custom 9x 28mm cut down .223 case jobs though. I supose with loads worked up around the Norma 158 grain FMJ/SWC .357 bullet sold in Europe it might have been Hague complient as well.
