as carbine prices go through the roof I'm entertaining thoughts of a plainfield (I have a rockola, so unless you know where I can get a usgi m1 for under 500 shipped and ffl'd please don't weigh in telling me to get a "real" m1. I have one. I want a shooter. one I can bubba.)

BUT the question is: how do you tell an early plainfield from a later model. I hear teh early plainfields are the best of the commercial guns. I want one with mostly usgi parts.

I'm not sure on the Plainfield specifics, but another good option is the Iver Johnson. Mine has been flawless and I paid less than half of your mark at a pawn shop.

on the plainfield carbine the parts will interchange with a military carbine . the iver johnson will not .ive had two plainfields and both were reliable, dont know the date of manufacture.

apparently iver bought plainfield and as time went on they used up their milsurp parts and used more and more of their own stuff. apparently quality went down with the usgi parts count. according to what you read on the web. so I take it with some salt.

CMP has rack grade Inland's for $419 and service grade Inlands for $495 .. ..so you'd be about $520 for the Service grade . . but definately under for the Rack Grade. FWIW

cmp rack grade sounds really really beat up. at about 460 delivered. I could get a pretty nice plainfield for 400 or less. surely the usgi's aren't so much better that a worn out one is better than a cared for commercial? anybody got a picture of cmp rack grade?

I've got a service grade and it's really nice. The rack grades I've seen look pretty nice and see to go about $800 at the lcoal guns shows. (FWIW) I can't comment on value versus a Plainfield as I have never shot (nor seen) one.

Regards,
Dave
