Are the Plainfield M1 Carbines mil spec? Do they have "100% parts interchangabilty" with the USGI M1 Carbines. I have a chance to pick one up in a trade and was wondering if they were any good. This is supposedly a LNIB example but who knows. I have been loosely in the market for a Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine. I was under the impression that the A.O. are MIL SPEC clones and generally good while the Unaversals dont have parts interchangability and are bad. Where do the plainfileds fit in?

Iver Johnson Plainfield carbines are investment cast frames mated to USGI and some new manufactured parts.
Most all USGI parts will interchange.
I had a couple of these rifles, they aren't bad shooters.

I have a Plainfield, real sweet shooter and my daughter has pretty much "confiscated" it...:) They should go for $100 to $150 less than a "real" GI carbine.

Plainfield Machine Co. began using military surplus parts,
and as the surplus parts were used up, began making
their own parts. This was before Iver Johnson took over
Plainfield. From all I have heard, the Plainfield and the
Iver Johnson carbines were made to USGI spex.

Not USGI spec was the Universal carbine made in Florida:
it was more a M1 carbine look-alike.

The Volunteer Enterprises/Commando Arms Mark I, Marl II
and Mark IV stocks made for GI carbines did fit the
Plainfield but would not fit the Universal.
