M1 carbine scope mount... what are the options?

My son wants a scope mount and scope for his M1 carbine for Christmas. Is there anything out there?

Also need a sling/oiler at some point.

Leaving for work, so link and run time.

Ultimak Rail for a dot or a scout scope. Watch the eye relief.

Replace the rear sight with a picatinny rail. Means you have no irons, but it otherwise works OK. I hear this isn't always the most stable mount.

Or you can drill and tap for a side mount with a set of weaver rings. Only works with a 1" scope, none of that new-fangled 30mm stuff. If you have a universal m1, you're probably already drilled and tapped. And you can still use your irons. The downside is that, with a top ejection, the bracket (and to a lesser extent the scope) will get beat up by the ejecting brass.

PS: try a weaver 1-3x scope on there. Well-suited to the design of the firearm.

Thanks. I don't think I'll drill/tap... so when my boy wakes up to the value of wood stocks and iron sights he can put it back the way it should be.

I pulled one off the rear sight of my grandfathers rockola after he kicked off. it was penty sturdy and secure, but it wasn't what I wanted. his was made by s&k. I want the ultimak rail, but for 90 bucks yeeeeeeee! maybe I need to rethink the s&k.....

I saw a guy who had made a mount by jb welding a rail to a metal handguard and using a couple U-bolts to secure it to the barrel. or soemthing to that effect. I can't find the site now.

The Ultimak is really the best option. It's secure and works with red dots or long eye relief scopes. Also, it's easy to restore the Carbine to GI configuration in about 5 minutes. Given the effective range of the M1 carbine, a red dot is perfect for it.

Okay... what's a cheap but functional LER scope or red dot? I'm not overly concerned with heirloom quality at this point. Boy wants crosshairs because he likes them, but a cheapish red dot would certainly work. Since I'm probably going to spend the dough for the ultimak that pretty much eats up the budget for the setup. I know it doesn't really make sense. But aving the mount fixed solely on the rear sight dovetail seems to me that it would place a lot of strain on that one point, and the reviews I've read of that type are mostly negative. So I think I'll get the ultimak.

BSA makes some really cheap red dots, don't they?

$90 rail.
$.80 a shot (for anything but wolf).
$30 piece of plastic that tells you where the bullets should end up.

(Spring for better glass. You'll like the rifle better, and it's not like you throw it away when the carbine gets converted back)

that aint what a WW2 carbine looks like so you do you want it. CDNN has inexpensive red dots and scopes.and the short SKS scopes wont strain any thing.$19 and up.the carbine is not a 1000yrd gun.

I hear good things about swift pistol scopes (about $90) leupold 2x m8's can be had for $150 or less all day long on ebay/gunbroker ncstar has a better collection of reviews than I would expect for them. Simmons made a 4x sks scope that worked great as a short eye relief scope, and I've had a truglo red dot (cabelas bargain bin $40 [that is what I will be putting on my eventual ultimak rail and m1) on an sks and a tasco cheapie dot on a 10/22 with no issues. stepping up a notch, millet makes a decent red dot for less than $100.

If you ask the AR crowd they will tell you that nothing short of an eotech is sufficient for shooting cans on saturday afternoon and any glass less then $400 dollars will self destruct while you are looking at it in the gun safe. (though to their credit I wouldn't want tasco optics on a combat rifle, I just wish they would lighten up some.)

That leupold m8 2x scope is wonderful, by the way. I have one on my Ruger MKII. It's easier to hit a target at 100y with that than with a 9x simmons. Brighter and clearer.

As for dots, Millet is a good name. Burris is better.

thanks guys. I've been looking at the cheapie red dots and it seems for the money you can't really go wrong. 30 bucks... it breaks they send you another one and you put it on the 22. I'm trying to decide which now.

Certainly would prefer an eotech or Leupold of course. But I ain't a brazillionaire.

that's why I tried to throw out something for every budget. not every situation calls for high end optics.

B-Square markets a mount for the M-1 Carbine that is easily installed in the rear sight slot.
It is available at Mid- South Shooters supply for $24.95 with 1" rings included.

The red dot on my Rock Ola above is a Bushnell Trophy. It's pretty good for a sub-$100 optic.

Scope or red dot sight? I went with the latter (Bushnell TRS-25 on Ultimak rail). The M1 carbine is not a long distance precision tool.

I went with a weaver 1-3x on mine. Should arrive tomorrow, along with the side scope mount and base. The one tenuous advantage of owning a Universal!
