I'm probably a little slower than most on this, but I found out something I didn't know a couple of days ago.

My nephew is about to attend a school as a designated squad marksman as his unit is preparing to return to Iraq (his first visit, though). As he has explained it to me, though he's not a "sniper", if his squad needs some precision shooting done out to 600 meters, he's their man.

All the training he has done over here has been with the M4, but he uses a little better halo sight than the run of the mill rifleman. Visiting with him over the holidays, he said that he would be using an M14 at the school. I asked him if he would be issued an M14 after that and he said, no. Apparently as long as he's in the US his issued weapon is the M4, but when he arrives in Iraq, he'll be issued an M14.

From what I gathered, our military doesn't have enough M14's for the troops at home to have one. They're all in Iraq!

I can't tell you how tickled I was to hear that while he was in harm's way, he'd be carrying a .308 instead of a "22".:)

.308 is so much better than a .22 on steroids. But that .22 on steroids is still powerful in it's own right.

Current theatre of operations has called for a weapon for fast multiple target engagements at midrange (200-600 yards). The M14 with some sort of medium magnification optics fits the bill. But the military has also adapted the M16 platform for this requirement. The different branches refer to it as some form of Designated Marksman Rifle or something of that nature. The Marine Corps and Army developed similar rifles utilizing a 20" barrel with a 1-7" twist and quad rails. The Navy opted for an 18".

20cows:
The February 2006 issue of Small Arms Review (on newstands now) has an article "Precision Shooting In The Global War On Terror" by Robert Bruce.
It's got a lot of info about the designated marksmen and a couple of photos of men armed with M14s. One is a two page photo from Afghanistan that shows lots of detail of the rifle. (It looks a lot like an M1a, and is semi-auto only.)

Thanks, ACP230, I'll have to try to find that magazine and do some reading.

(I'm not proud or nothin' about him bein' a DM. I took the lad huntin' alot when he was a might younger, as he grew up a city-boy.):D
