i've been wanting a .308 semi auto battle rifle for awhile now. i've been looking at the various m1a's out there. i need to have a rubber recoil pad on which ever one i choose(old shoulder injury). i went to the local shop and he told me that i would have to replace the stock $300 to $600 if i chose the walnut version m1a. was he blowing smoke up my butt or does anybody make a prefit, bolt on recoil pad for the wood stock m1a? will i have to get a synthetic stock m1a instead? thanks, craig

Call em up. I like the synthetic M1A with the bubber pad.

You mean like this? :) I have a rubber pad on one of my USGI stocks, it just screws in place of the standard metal.

Disclaimer: Please note I don't know the seller...

M1A synthetic stock model came with rubber pad. If you order one with muzzle break, the recoil is very tame, and you won't need the pad anyway.

I'm not sure how it kicks with standard flash-suppressor.

My SA synthetic stock model with the standard flash hider kicks about as hard as target loads in a 20 gauge shotgun, i.e. not much. My son had no problem with it when he was 12 years old. Called it his favorite rifle.

I agree with Bill St. Clair. I have a new M1A Scout with the good muzzle brake that I have compared to a 20 gauge recoil-wise. They don't beat you up at all.

well, looks like i do have some options besides replacing the stock. synthetic stock or scout model? hmm. this is going to require some research. thanks for the replies. the local shop is starting to irritate me, at least one of the guys working there is. might have to start checking out other shops. it's only 60 miles one way, lol.

Yeah like everybody else has said.......................the M1A is a sweet shooter. I can put 100rds thru my "Loaded Standard" in a day and not a feel a thing. There are LOTS of pad options - the cheapest of which are slip-on units OR try the Pact recoil pad that YOU wear instead of the gun. It's cheap and great for range use, as you're always protected no matter WHAT rifle you pick up.

it's academic now. went by a shop in the next town and he had a saiga .308 there. tried it on and liked it. it did look kind of lonely sitting there, and then it followed me home. maybe i'll get an m1a later. depends on what kind of gun the wife wants. she has expensive tastes.
