No one said destroy your original lock screw. If it doesn't work , put the original back on. For $40 bucks, it's cheap insurance.
What research shows a 180grn load is dangerous??I don't think anyone is suggesting that your M1/M1A will be destroyed by shooting reloads or commercial ammo. I do think one has to be aware that they may be damaged if hot rodded too much. Just like keeping the bullet weight under 172-173 grain. It took some research to be aware of this.

Commercial Ammo in Garands I want to use commercial ammo in my Garand. What concerns should I be aware of? There are several types of 30-06 commercial ammunition that are represented by their manufacturer as being safe for use in all rifles including semiautomatics. Most manufacturers have a...thecmp.org
Here is a link from CMP about using hunting ammunition in the Garand circa 2014.
The gist is some ammunition is safe for use in the Garand and semi-auto rifles, some is not.
They recommend researching the ammunition’s manufacturers information.
I’ll admit, I stopped being active learning all things Garand around 2012 so I missed this tidbit of information.
I do not hunt with my Garands and I reload so I’ll stick with my FMJ or SMK reloads I know are safe for Garands.
I would love to see a list of commercial ammo that you can NOT shoot in the garand because it WILL cause damage. The ammunition and/or reloading components, in many cases, weren't around when the M1 was designed and the design hasn't changed. It's not saying the M1or M1A is a bad design it's just saying that some research should be done before just sticking anything you can find in it.
Sounds like a good research project.I would love to see a list of commercial ammo that you can NOT shoot in the garand because it WILL cause damage.
Been doing it for years....still haven't found any that causes concern. As stated earlier...the warmest (superformance 180grn) is ~7% higher than the warmest milsurp loading. Nearly all commercial ammo is at the milsurp pressure or lower.Sounds like a good research project.

Milsurp ammo operates from (approximately) 8500psi to 11000psi at the port. Commercial ammo is from (approximately) 9200psi to 11700psi(Horn Superformance 180gr) Highest commercial is ~7% more pressure than highest milsurp load.
