Got $400 to spend on another milsurp rifle. I want one of these 2 but can't decide. I figure the Mauser is much more common, thus will appreciate less. Accuracy, in general, should be a wash since both will shoot better than I'm capable. Just a range gun, and something to pass down one day. I have other Mosins, but no Mausers.

M39 - $349
M48 - $299

Which would you choose & why?

No Mauser... get a Mauser. [emoji6]

I picked one up off S&W forum for $295 (M48A), and it was beautiful. All matching and pretty much brand new. I pulled the front sight hood off and cleaned all the grease off the entire sight and the cleaning rod. I'll start pulling more off and cleaning over the next few weeks. My Yugo SKS took me like two months to get clean... being I rarely had enough time to set aside to do it.

Go for the M-39, they are less common then the M-48 mausers at the present time. Plus affordable 7.92x57 ammo is not as common as 7.62x54R. Pick up a Mauser next time you have a few $ to spare.

I'd get the M39. I've got two and definitely like them better than my Mauser. They both have beautiful wood stocks too.

If you don't have a mauser, get the mauser. I've got a bunch of both, but no M39 so that's what I'd get for my collection. But you need a Mauser. Everyone needs a Mauser... or 10.

People had the same view of Nagant revolvers a few years back... I'm still happy I grabbed mine right after that Sandy Hook shooting ($110, including the hand pick fee [emoji6]), because within a few months after that, they became vaporware. With the lead up to this next election, especially if Clinton gets the nomination, you'll see all guns starting to disappear. If she wins, then it will go full retard.

Also, 8mm Mauser is still out there. I picked up a few hundred rounds of Yugo 8mm not too long ago. Is it as common as 7.62x54R? Not at all, which is why I'd say grab some before it all is gone.

Im an M-39 advocate, and I'd get one , especially if your other Mosin's are of different flavors, say 91, 91/30, M-27, M-38, etc.....

If you allready have an M-39, then the Mauser would be a great addition.

get the mauser, easier to work on and find parts for and can be rebarreled in just about any caliber, plus the ergos are much better and its a better system to add scope mounts or optics to

get a m-39, they are what the russian 91,s should have been. eastbank.

I would have to go with the M48 Mauser first then get the Finn M39 later. Mausers just fit me better than a Mosin does.

My others are pre-war Russians and an all matching T53.

I'm going to go with the VKT Finn and grab a Mauser this summer. I think the Finn rifles will all be in private collections very soon, making them more difficult (and costly) to obtain.

I'll post a pic when it arrives.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I think you'll like it. I've got a couple of Finn-captured M91/30s that both shoot well. They both retained the Russian barrels but the triggers seem much better. One of them has an M39 trigger and it's the best shooting Mosin in my herd. I picked up a Tikka M91 a couple of weeks ago from someone who thought it was a run-of-the-mill M91/30. I shot it for the first time last Saturday. I aimed at an old tire at about 100 yards. I hit said tire. :) (It wasn't inflated.) Then the wind picked up so I only got a couple of rounds out of it.

(on a side note, we took the tire home with us. It wasn't ours, but it really irks me when people leave shot up stuff like that on public land used for shooting.)

Looking forward to pics.

Just be aware that surplus 8x57 is drying up and difficult to find in large quantities. It will most likely be a calibre to handload for as factory ammo is quite pricey.

I can't comment on the M39, but I really like my M48. Try and find out which version it is as the M48A and M48B use more stamped parts than the M48 which uses a lot of milled parts. If you're buying these "as new" you'll notice that the bore is very shiney as they've never (really) been shot. Make sure the cleaning rod and sling are included too! All parts should be matching on these too.

Good choice. Honestly, the Mauser isn't at all superior to the Mosin. A well-tuned Mosin bolt is extremely slick. I own an M91/30 with an extremely slick bolt, and recently picked up an M39 that's not so slick. I also own two Mausers. I'll admit that, at its worst, the Mosin bolt can be nasty, but comparing a good Mosin to a good Mauser, they're really neck and neck, with the Mosin being smoother at its best.

My advice would be to skip the M48 and M39 and get one of the best mil-surps, a Swede or a Swiss, if you don't already have one.

I am a "Mauser Guy" ... my first milsurp was a K98k Bringback gifted to me when I was 16-17. It was the first firearm for which I reloaded. Probably because of that connection they hold a special place for me.

If this were a choice between a 1st K98k or a 1st M39, I would have to give the edge to the former.

Change that K98k to an M48 and, for me, the M39 would easily win the decision.

I find my single M39 to be the equal of my many "Mausers" but I think that the sights are better ... and it is somewhat more refined than the 91/30s that I own or have handled.
