I was reading an interesting article by a British criminal forensic scientist on his experience in 1970 in assisting the government of Cyprus in investigating an unsuccessful assassination attempt (one of several) on Archbishop Makarios, who was the president of the country. Shortly after taking off in his helicopter from his residence, he was fired on by some Greek militants who thought he was too concilitory toward the Turks. His pilot was critically injured, but brought the chopper down intact. The author of the journal article said that the weapons used were a Lee-Enfield rifle, a Bren gun and an "M6 rifle." Was the author referencing the US made M6 aircrew survival rifle or some other weapon? Was there some other weapon in use in that part of the world at the time that had the designation M6?

That was a misprint. I saw a TV interview (on Greek television) with one of the participants in the assassination attempt, in which he stated that they used a Bren, a Lee-Enfield, and an M1 Garand. Note that they were mad at Makarios not only for being "conciliatory" towards the Turks, but also for his nonaligned policy in the Cold War. The sponsors of the opposition to Makarios were the Greek Junta, in power in Athens at the time. That's where the arms came from.

Wow, that's great! I knew someone would answer that question, even if it was a rather obscure historical point. Thanks!
