M91-30 Accuracy

I'm seriously considering scoping my surplus Mosin and getting a bent bolt handle for it, what kind of accuracy in inches can I expect at 100 yards? 400? With surplus ammo and the good stuff (is there any?).

Err on a sidenote, scope recommendations under 200 dollars? Really I'm just using this as a practice rifle so I can feel like I deserve a fancier one when I finally get the cash.

Out of my 91-30, I can usually get 4-5" @ 100 yds using a mojo aperature sight. I think that is generally considered military acuracy. Havenot tried out to two or three hundred yards, can't see that far or a target anyway

depends on the rifle and its condition. Not all 91/30 rifles were built consistantly,

The Finnish 91/30's are by far the best. Mine will give fantastic MOA groups with a variety of loads. Of the Soviets the best ones I've had were pre-war, and of those Tulas seem to be the best. To ensure good accuracy, try to get one with a good bore and even more vital a good crisp crown. All-matching examples tend to be better. ALso, don't forget to tighten up the receiver screws. If the barrel is wedge into the stock, use shims at the receiver contact points to raise it up off the wood.

As far as scoping it at the receiver and bending the bolt, don't do it. It's a waste of time and money. You don't really need a scope for any of them. I'd put on a scout style mount at most.

Here's my breakdown based on the rifles I've owned and shot:

Tikka 91/30:
1-2 MOA, sub MOA possible

USSR pre-war with tight screws and a good bore:
2-3 MOA, MOA possible with some

USSR wartime production with tight screws and good bore:
2 1/2 to 4 MOA

USSR production parts gun with cruddy bore and poor crown:
Pieplate

Thanks all, I've got a good idea of how my rifle should perform now.

Well I'm simply going to get a scope to get used to shooting a scoped rifle.

Based on the comments here I think I might be better off just buying a secondhand remchester or sporterized mauser.

My best one does 2 inches at 100 yards. Then again I got one that never does better than 5 inches. Some Mosins are alot better than others.

A swiss K-31 takes a scope easily and will be accurate. The scope mount costs nearly as much as the rifle however.

There's a guy on Ebay that sells a mount what can be best described as a St Marie knockoff for around $70 with rings. I bought one about a month ago and am happy with it, though the rings are crap.

If you're after a very accurate, affordable rifle ready to mount a standard scope, I would suggest a Savage.
