Mac 90 Accessories

hey guys, Im looking into buying a norinco Mac 90. I am wondering if I can switch from a drag style stock to a reg. buttstock and hand grip with no gunsmithing. Also, the barrel isn't threaded. Ive heard there are some aks that have a tapered barrel and cannot be threaded. So can I have the barrel threaded? Anyone? Anyone?

Yes, on the buttstock with one warning....since the metal on a MAK90 is 1.5/1.6mm thick instead of 1.0 you may have to spend a few minutes with a file or Dremel to pare down the buttstock a bit. ( Don't recall having to do it with my Tapco T6, but I wanted to give you a head's up.)
As for the barrel, I believe if you look closely at the barrel in front of the front sight, you will see that it is slightly stepped, almost as though the threads had been ground off. Yours might be different, but on mine there is a noticable stepdown infront of the FSB. It might not allow threading the barrel, but a good gunsmith might be able to permanently attach a brake.

If you want to replace your thumbhole stock with a conventional buttstock and pistol grip, you will need to comply with 18 USC 922(r). Basically, you need to ensure that no more than 10 of the 15 named parts on your MAK 90 are imported. So you might install a U.S.-made buttstock, pistol grip and fire control group (counts as 3 parts). You would need to install a U.S.-made muzzle device if you had your barrel threaded also.

Certain MAK-90s have "slant-cut" receivers, which means that the rear of the receiver is... cut at an angle. This makes it relatively impossible to put a standard AK stock in the MAK-90 either all together or with some sort of gap. Ironwood designs makes a wood stock to fit the MAK-90 and I also deduced that you could dremel down a Romanian side-folder to fit in the MAK-90. As mentioned previously, the receiver is slightly thicker than a standard AK. Also, the rear trunnion is slightly longer than a standard AK and may require slight dremeling to fit the Romanian Stock.

In addition, the MAK-90 has to be 922(r) compliant which means you need to change out the trigger group, the front handguards, and the pistol grip to US made parts if you want to be legal. It's all pretty easy stuff to do.

If you need a US-made brake let me know, we make a pinned-on version for the AK's that have a .555" diameter muzzle. If your's is a different size we can machine it to your specs.
