I'm toying with the idea of using a Star Model B Super in IPSC matches (handles just like my 1911, with 1/3 the ammo cost), and I'm curious about the unloading procedure. At all the matches I've been to, when you finish shooting, you drop the mag, eject the chambered round, show the RO clear, and then drop the hammer. Well, the Star has a mag safety and you can't drop the hammer without a mag in the gun. Does IPSC have a procedure for that? Would I carry an empty mag to use to drop the hammer?

Normally with mag safety guns (a lot of BHPs, for example) you keep an empty mag on hand for this task.

I'd always mention this to the Safety Officer at that stage before loading up, and then tell him again once he's asking you to unload and show clear.

Once he grasps what you need to do, remove your last mag, eject the live round, show him 'clear,' slide forward, get your empty mag and insert it, drop the hammer, eject the empty mag, holster.

That's the procedure we all use in IDPA, and I imagine USPSA will follow the same routine.

IPSC or USPSA? (I ask because I don't see a location on your profile - if you're inside the USA though its probably USPSA)

I know that in USPSA its totally legal to disable a mag disconnect if you'd like. I've actually removed one from that same model of gun (or darned close - mine was a Star Modelo Super) and its just a tiny amount of material that needs to be removed from the mag release (take a peak inside the magwell and see the part protruding inwards - notice that when the mag is inserted it'll push that out of the way - the part that protrudes in just needs to be filed/ground away). This can be done in any division as a magazine disconnect isn't considered to be a safety.

I'm ASSUMING the same is true in IPSC but some of their rules are differnent.

That said, if you don't want to modify the gun, I know people who shoot Browning Hi-Powers and they do exactly like Sam1911 says - carry an empty mag around and use that to drop the hammer.
