I have 4 for one gun, 8 for another and 13 (not counting the defective mag I have yet to send in for warranty replacement) for the last one.

Various mags, depending on the gun, are broken down into: a) HD use, b) range use and c) reserves.

How many do you keep around?

Two, three, or rarely four, for everything. That should be plenty... Except for AK47 mags, which I guess I must have 12 or so of...

Oops, Im thinking I should have started this thread in the "autoloaders" section. If this thread is moved, Im sure thats where it will be. :)

I wish I could own an AK47 or AR-15, but cannot justify the cost or how many handguns/shotguns I would be giving up in order to own such a weapon (after all the accessories I would certainly purchase). If I were to have one of these, knowing me, I would have roughly 20 mags sitting around.

HD use - The magazine is attached to the weapon (Rem 870.) For any CCW, I like to have at least 15 magazines. One in the gun, one or two spares to carry, couple in the car, couple in the BoB, plus a handful for the range.

Range use - When I lived in the great white north, I wanted as many as possible so that winter trips to the range could be made up of more time shooting and less time loading. Now, about 5 is ideal.

Reserves - not sure what you meant by this. For a safe queen, having the requisite 2 is fine.

Honestly, I don't understand why you'd want more than 3 or 4 mags for a rifle unless you have a vest and/or web gear that has pouches to hold all those mags.

I'm pretty new to this site so I'm confused by the threads about "why would a civilian own body armor" and "what is too tacticool" alongside threads about owning 10 plus mags for a given rifle

By "reserves" I did mean backups or "safe queen" mags.

As a comparison, do you know how many cars Jay Leno owns? Does he really need all of these? Nah. He has them because he wants them.

Sometimes, having many mags (even more than one could practically use) or lets say guns for that matter, has less to do with need and much more to do with want.

I have three mags for my AR-15. I want some 20s because they don't get in the way while shooting at the bench, but aside from that, I don't have any desire for more.

Well, I'm not going to go counting them, lest I discover an inadequacy.
That, and I really don't want to see how many heirloom, collectable, mags I have holding ammo.

Only long arm that could use more is the Mossberg M44--and those are as hard to find as HPST.45acp is lately. Only short arm that could use a couple more is the Colt .32acp

I am actually ahead of count in mags, having some thompson stick mags, grease gun mag, and BAR mags about for web gear pouches.

Magazines wear out, break, get stepped on, lose their form, rust, and get lost. They also get banned and prices inflate to an absurd level. They'll also never be as cheap in the future as they are now. They also keep better than bee's honey.

Why NOT buy as many as you'll need for the rest of your life?

I'm not sure how many I have, but I know I can load more than 750 rounds into my AK mags and walk out the door wearing them. Add an AK and a few other doodads and it gets pretty hard to walk...

As for 1911 mags I have dozen (very expensive) 10 rounders, about the same in eight rounders and a grocery bag full of military and commercial seven rounders...

I have 15 magazines for my M1A (7.62x51mm), 12 of them are of the 25 round variety, with 10 of those unopened, mostly because i fear they will be banned someday.

I have 6 fifteen-round magazines for my handgun (M&P .40)

I have 6 ten-round magazines for my target rifle (.22lr)

As far as needing some sort of special gear to hold magazines, a simple backpack should do in a pinch.

I have a few guns with only one mag. I have several with 6-8 mags, and a pair of rifles that share 36 mags between them.

I figure buy it cheap and stack it deep applies to ammo loaders, too. I don't forsee a time when I really NEED loaded ammo when I'll be able to call a "time-out" while I reload mags...

What I meant was, I remember seeing a thread "why would a civilian want body armor" where a couple people were argueing against it; and then there was the thread "what is too tacticool" where people were kinda mocking those with gear. That's why I was confused by the threads on mags, I figured people would want a vest and/or web gear with pouches for all those mags.

I can see why you'd want lots of mags though given the current administration and their lust for another AWB.

Apparently I have more than I thought. I was doing some spring cleaning a few weeks ago and I found boxes and boxes of magazines. I don't recall buying them so it must have been long ago and they must have been on sale. I remember about 15 years ago some outfit had FAL mags at $5, $4 for 10, and $2 if you bought 50. So I bought 50.

I know I only have one magazine for my Luger. I have a couple of magazine fed 22 rifles and I have 3-4 for each. Same with the rim fire pistols. I think I have about 15 for each center fire pistol and it looks like I have a bunch for the rifles that use mags. I would estimate somewhere around 300 or so total number.

I have 11 for my AR and 1-3 for everything else. I'd say 3 mags is enough for almost any gun. If I was going to war, then I'd want all 11 AR mags fully loaded.

I have four High Capacity mags for my Sigma, not nearly enough when going to the range. I hate sitting there reloading and wasting the time I paid for.

Your rifle range charges by the hour? That's harsh.

4-8 for each pistol and at least 10 for each rifle

I figure that it is the weakest link in any weapon system. you might as well get a few when you can afford them, then try to replace them when you can't afford it.
