I was checking out the Magsafe website...and found a .25 goes 1700 fps, a 9mm that goes 2000, a .38 that goes 2100, a 10mm that goes 2400 :what:, and a .45 Long colt that reaches 1700.
I'm guessing that these are as hyped up as the ammo, but I am curious if these are actually attainable without causing over-pressure to the weapon; even if these loads are much lighter then normal.

Believe me, they do not scrimp on the powder charge. I have some Magsafe for my .454 that will get your attention!

Very low projectile mass allows for higher velocities.

The energy is high also, since energy goes as velocity squared.

The lack of momentum limits penetration at the very low mass though.

Designed to transfer as much force as possible upon entering target. Maximum velocity, low weight = fragmentation to prevent over penetration. What is the ammunition carried by the Air Marshals for use on planes?

Magsafe manufactured (and subsequently discontinued) a product called "Fast Hardball" which probably offered the best terminal performance of any of their products. It was the only load that they produced that I found to be of reasonable design given that most of their ammo is known for its extreme fragmentation and correspondingly shallow penetration.

They were essentially FMJTCs filled with epoxy only (without any lead shot) and offered in various calibers. (.380, 9mm, .357, .45ACP, etc.)

By way of example, the 9x19 Fast Hardball offering was a 60 grain FMJTC @ 1920fps / 491fpe that was good for about 18-20 inches of penetration in ordnance gelatin according to the "Guns&Ammo" article that I read back then. (in the late 80s)

I watched 2 videos of the original magsafe ammo as loaded by Joe Zamboni. He shot his loads into gelatin & meat. Penetration was usually about 7 to 10 inches for the most part. I bought some of his ammo and shot some armadillos with it. They all looked like they had been shot with a high power rifle. The ammo was so light and fast that you had to aim much higher due to the lack of recoil otherwise you would shoot way low.

The higher the caliber the better as he could load more shot. As I recall he had several loads for the .45acp that were over 2,000fps and required heavier recoil springs. Some of his .38 special loads could not be shot from an airweight. He had .38 loads that were over 2,000fps from a 2" s & w that would defeat a level IIA vest.

He sold his company and moved to Australia or New Zealand where he was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Speer Gold Dots in 357 Sig (I'd assume 125gr) last I heard.

I don't think any law enforcement agencies use these low-penetration rounds--even with a solid hit, they are marginal on penetration for a good stop.

Yes Federal Air Marshals carry the .357 Sig.
Other federal officers will carry other handguns on aircraft.

Not Glasser junk.

Putting handgun sized hole in the skin of a plane is not going to cause problems.

They leak like crazy anyway.

Explosive decompression requires VERY large holes (thing blast type holes).

And most of that "explosive" decompression came from the bomb itself :neener:

I'm probably gonna buy some for a .25 and see how it does against evil milk cartons.
Heck shooting those out of a .32 acp conversion Mosin Nagant would be interesting too, I wonder what velocities I would get out of a 29 inch barrel.

Any barrel much past 14-15" will cause you to start losing major velocity since the gas pressure in the barrel is less than the friction on the bullet. You get about the same velocity from a 10" barrel as you do a 4.5" IME with a .32 ACP.

(from a contender and a scorpion)

Frangible ammo uses the high velocities so it actually gets some penetration before breaking up all over the place.

Glasers have pretty high velocities as well, in .25 it's well over 1000fps, when standard ammo is 650-700.
