I couldn't find a general "Battle Rifle" thread back to October, so I'm starting a new one.

I bought an M1A many years ago, in Albany, New York, before the S.A.F.E. Act. I could still buy pre-ban regular-capacity magazines for it, so I got a few of those (New York has a non-expiring state "assault weapons" ban mirroring the 1994 10-year-until-expiration federal ban).

I went into the gun store with the intention of buying a FAL. I shouldered an AR-10. I shouldered a FAL. When I shouldered an M1A, that was my rifle. I walked out with it, some magazines, and 1,000 rounds of milsurp ammo.

I got a new battle rifle in July, and gave the M1A to my son. The new rifle is a K&M Arms M17S in 308/7.62x51.

It takes AR-10 magazines. I have ten 20-rounders made by Magpul and shipped from my home town of Cheyenne, Wyoming. They're filled with hunting 308. I also have a few magazines of another brand, the name of which I don't care.

The rifle sports a Trijicon ACOG 3.5 power scope.

It also has a Magpul one-point sling, with a front mount so that I can also use it as a two-point sling.

You have probably noticed from the photo that it's a bullpup. It has a 16" barrel, which isn't really long enough for 308, meaning I likely lose a few hundred feet per second over a long-enough barrel. I don't expect to use this as a sniper rifle, I have a bolt gun for that, so I'm not worried about the small loss of velocity. It still has hugely more energy than 223.

K&M also sells this rifle with a 20" barrel, and they chamber it in 223. 300 Blackout is in the prototype stage. They also sell California-compliant models.

The review I read before deciding to buy it said that usually bullpup reviews say something like, "It was a really nice rifle, for a bullpup." This rifle doesn't need such excuses. It's just a damn good rifle, by any standards. I agree. In spades.

Just a run of the mill Century C308 Spanish CETME. Rattle can green on the furniture. Added an HK carry handle. Drilled functional cooling holes in the handguard.

I didn't recall where I'd heard the model designation before, but had a moment of deja-vu when I saw the OP's photo:

Like the Corporal, my only semiauto that fits the battle rifle designation is my rebarreled 7.62 NATO M1 Garand.

I like the term 'battle rifle' -- it's an example of a retronym. I'm waiting for it to show up in Small Arms Review's crossword puzzle.

BigBlue94/Chuck R.:
So many of you guys have very cool variations of the FAL and/or HK-91, plus Garands etc.

Do you want to see a collection of your types, plus M1A-1s etc which might be hard to believe?
It is on AKfiles, "General Rifle", "Tell me about the M-14.." Topic.

Scroll down that topic, to a few photos of guns of "Hansellhd". These are just a small fraction of his collection. Also -- he operates a Cat Rescue service.:)

Offhand: I really like your Enfield.
Have you seen the photo of the WW2 New Zealand sniper at Monte Cassino, peering into his scope, aimed uphill? You might already have deduced that it is an Enfield.

Thats pretty savage. Ive been tempted by the Kel-Tec bullpup, but the forward ejection is kinda goofy and, its, well.....a Kel-Tec.

Ive got an AR-10. Its neat. Its accurate. Its ridiculously heavy and no way would I want to haul it around a battlefield.

I could get by with a Garand. It balances so nicely that even close quarters maneuvering isnt out of the question and of course it excels at open field work.

If I had to march to war tomorrow, however, Id grab my A2. Ya, its "only" a .223, but its enough battle rifle for me. :)

I have no pictures. Tough call to select from several potential "battle" rifles. An SKS. Fun but a bit dated. A 24 inch barreled Vepr in .308. It is delightfully accurate and works as a designated marksman rifle..(feral hog liquidator)...but it is big and a bit slow to manipulate or change mags. A MAS 49/56 rechambered to .308 with an adjustable gas valve added. I love this rifle but its accuracy is pretty ho hum. Useful to 300 yards but... an AR15 weighs less and has greater capacity and lighter ammo along with greater precision and much easier mag changes. If I ever go to battle it will probably be at home to repel boarders. The battle rifle with probably be a Ruger PC9.

The old '03 sported miserable sights for combat use, just too fine for down and dirty work, but the Marines made good use of them at Soissons & Belleau Wood suppressing German machine gun fire at 500+ yards. Later in the "Banana Republic" mini-wars they did as well and were still carrying them (even some 'low numbered ones) on Guadalcanal. Brophy mentions the inovative "Marine sight" employed to get the battle distance zero down to 250 yards from 547, but I don't know if they ever carried that improvement into combat.

I've owned this Springfield 1903A1 National Match rifle for over 25 years. It's a 1931 gun made up for & shot in the Camp Perry National Matches that same year. I took it back to Perry in 2006, my first match since my college days in 1966. Shot it with the match director's permission (Gary Anderson IIRC) and managed a silver medal score in the Springfield Match even after saving two rounds in the 200 Rapid Sitting course or I'd have done better. The day prior, sight-in day, I scored a 92 at 600 with it...hellofa rifle. It has all the drawing numbers stamped in the wood, the serial number on the bolt and of course the star gage cartouche at the bottom of the muzzle crown.

With my loads or M72 Nat'l Match ammo and my then 60 yr old eyes, it would hold a bit over 1 MOA at 200 yds with the original sights....but those days are long gone now, but not the pride at dropping 10 at 200 rapid into a group that I could lay my palm over.

I found it up near Perry and paid a collector, the princely sum of $1600...the guy also had the program of fire for the 1931 matches, plus both of the O'Hare sight covers and an O'Hare micrometer sight adjuster as a part of the deal. When I took it back to Perry in '06, it was the first time it had fired the National Match course in 75 years!

In the pics, the 2nd one shows it with the sight covers in place along with a really nice 1903 M2 .22 trainer I've shot fairly regularly for the past 35 years. Best regards, Rod

Very old pic of my PTR-91F. That gorgeous HK handguard unfortunately bore against the barrel and caused stringing, so I swapped the original free-float back on. The 4-16 FFP scope was really too long for proper eye relief without interfering with the cocking lever. It was also one of the TC contract barrels with shallow flutes...was never really reliable. Still have it, and one day may see about a rebarrel, but otherwise it was supplanted by this...

Aero M5 receivers, Criterion M118LR 20" chromed 1:11 twist, RRA NM trigger. Still working on loads...seems indifferent to GMM 168 and 175 SMK, but around 1.5MOA with PPU 155 BTHP. Have some handload to try next time I get to the range, though.
