EDIT: Request was rescinded! http://bangordailynews.com/2013/02/...r-records-of-concealed-weapon-permit-holders/

Bangor Deadly News, I mean Daily News just requested the information on all CCW holders from police departments around the State. In Maine some towns issue their own permits and some are done through the state police so the request went out to several departments. They claim they don't intend to release the information at this time. Their facebook page has been blowing up from what I hear with criticism, please join in.

Link.

EDIT: I would request everyone go to bangordailynews.com and write a letter to some of their administration people that you oppose this invasion of privacy.

Paul LePage, Maine's Governor

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR LEPAGE TODAY: Governor LePage on news that the Bangor Daily News is requesting the names and addresses of concealed weapons permit holders from law enforcement agencies across the state: “If newspapers would like to know who has concealed weapons permits, then they should know the Governor has his. I have serious concerns that BDN’s request will incite fear among gun owners and non-gun owners alike regarding their safety. There is no reason why these records should be public and I encourage the Legislature to act quickly to make this personal information confidential. As I have said, the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms will not be questioned while I am Governor. That is especially true for those who respect the law enough to go through the process of obtaining a permit to carry concealed.”

Just to save everyone some time, it is pretty safe to assume that almost everyone in Maine has a gun. Sometimes carried, sometimes in the truck, and almost always, at home. The largest country has like 4 deputies to patrol an area the size of MA,CT and RI combined. To be fair, the game wardens do a lot of general LEO duties, but the people are pretty self-sufficient. It would be a very poor state in which to start off a career as a burglar.

You're right guns are much more common and crime is pretty low but it does still happen. Especially in the city of Portland which 'bend' the Constitution and harass anyone OCing.

I just applied for my non-res CC license in Maine, and I read the statute which says that the list of license holders is "not a public list". I had hoped that means "pound sand" to newspapers et al.

A letter I just wrote to several senior members of the newspaper. Not my finest articulation but oh well.

Hello, I wasn't sure who to send this to. I recently learned of Bangor Daily News' request of personal information of concealed carry permit holders in Maine. This is poor taste and very inappropriate. Publishing (or even having the data stolen/hacked) may put permit holders in severe jeopardy from criminals or others. As a permit holder, should my information become public as a result of BDN's request and I am harmed or my property stolen while I'm not home I will hold the Bangor Daily News responsible for any damages.

Furthermore there are already hundreds of Mainers organizing to make sure your newspaper does not endanger our lives or the lives of our children. We will ask friends and family to cancel their subscriptions, and to boycott your newspaper, as well as ask advertisers not to do business with you as a result of your invasion of our privacy. Look at the consequences of the New York newspaper that published permit holders' information and decide if that is a business plan that makes sense to you.

Sincerely,

A concerned citizen.

From the newspaper editorial comment:

The BDN never would have published personally identifying information of any permit holder in Maine, as a newspaper in New York had done

I call BS....why else would they need the information? If they wanted numbers, they could have requested numbers.

The editorial also said they would destroy records from organizations that had already provided them. Maine'ers should find out who those groups were that already disclosed information and punish them.

oh.... they're not going to get off that easy!

I've written my state reps and state senator urging them to support Govenor LePage's request to codify that this info. be strictly protected by law.

And as for the Bangor Daily News?

I'm hurting them the best way possible....

I'm going to "unfriend" them on FB :D

Can't really punish them as right now it IS considered public information, we have a bill that will hopefully pass that will make it confidential.

It took less than a day for them to get shouted down and to run home with their tails between their legs.

I encourage anybody in Maine to cancel their subscription and to remove them from your FB like list.

Maine isn't a very big audience, and you can hit them hard where it hurts most, so that they will be sure not to go there again.

Here's the e-mail address for the managing editor, should you like to share your feelings on the matter.

I found out about this yesterday afternoon and we had that frigging paper flooded with messages and pulling their idiotic request this morning! I have a friend who CCW's and also had a stalker at work. They let loose with the addresses, her life could have been in grave danger! Of course, she is good with the gun, so maybe the stalker would have been done for!

Sent from my DROID RAZR

Even though the newspaper may not publish the list, they still need to be punished. The names, addresses, phone #'s, finances, property ownership, criminal convictions, all public records of any kind, and pictures of ALL newspaper employees, owners, etc. must be published. As the liberals like to chime, it may only be symbolic, but it is a reasonable step in the correct direction. You can even call it a "universal background check" with full disclosure.

I'm from Presque Isle, ME

I have family everywhere in that state and it is a very liberal state. I used to argue with my cousins at the dinner table all the time.

That said - everyone has a gun, hikes with a gun, and the shooting sports are popular. Only problem is they embrace the "hunter" angle and likely would support a fairly serious level of "control" on handguns and "assault rifles". We are an odd state - libertarian would be he way I describe it, with a creeping influence of liberalism slowly taking over...

As for Bangor Daily news, those liberal, faux intellectual leeches can go pound sand. They are pursuing an agenda and sales at the potential cost of other peoples lives and property. They are the worst kind of "enlightened" liberal...

I'm in Fla now - too cold in The County.

I love this part.

The BDN never would have published personally identifying information of any permit holder in Maine, as a newspaper in New York had done

They would just pass it on to a 3rd party who can then post it online without a direct link back to them. Then write about the 3rd party in there newspaper as if they just found the info randomly online. "Don't blame us, we don't make the news, we just report it. (even when we have to go out and create it first)".

very accurate discription of the feelings about guns here in Maine.

I try to tell my "hunter" friends, the Second Amendment isnt about hunting, its about resisting tyranny.
I get a blank stare back.
