mainspring question

What is the strength of the mainspring in a USGI 1911A1 Colt? I need to replace one that is a bit corroded. thanks. This particular pistol likes 18.5 pound recoil springs. would I still go with the standard 23# mainspring?

A standard 23# mainspring should be O.K., but if you are using an 18 1/2 pound recoil spring (which I think is too heavy) be sure to get a heavy-duty firing pin spring.

Remember, a heavy recoil spring will slightly slow and buffer the slide's rearward travel, but it will batter the slide stop pin when the slide is accelerated going forward into battery.
