I took a friend out today, a die-hard large frame guy and had him shoot my Bulgarian Mak. He'd never fired a 9x18 and had his reservations.
200 rounds later chasing 2-liter pop bottles all over the side of a hill at 50' or so he handed it to me and said "I guess I should take this home and clean it for you". He asked how to strip it and 3 seconds later I handed him the pieces..he smiled and said "I want one".
Then I showed him the Uncle Mikes IWB holster and told him to Dremmel off the lanyard loop and look at this nice little CC set-up for around $230 and he said again "I want one". Then I told him the prices for ammo and the fact that those were around the 5000th rounds through it that I could vouch for and he said "You wanna sell it?".
I'll tell you, I love my CZ82, but for CC and pure ease of operation, the Mak wins. If your gonna carry outside the waist band, the CZ wins hands down, but inside the waist band, given the weight difference and slimmer handle, the Mak takes it.
One last thing...I let him fire a clip of Silver Bear HP and we went and found the bullets (3 of them). Expansion was pretty good for cheap ammo and would definitely do more damage than FMJ in a "soft" target. (I've fired over 250 rounds of Silver Bear HP through it and not a single failure of any kind).
The Mak isn't as reliable as a wheel gun obviously, but I can't think of another autoloader that I'd put in front of it in regard to reliability.

Dang, Just think of all the Glock guys trading in their "Perfection" in for a Mak tomorrow.
IT WILL BE MADNESS I TELL YOU!

Seriously tho, It does intrigue me a bit to hopefully try one someday and see if i at least enjoy them. Im a Diehard .45acp fan so making me switch to 9x18 is gonna be tough when i wont even do it for a 9mm 9x19.

But ive owned a few CZ's in other types of guns and all were top quality beating many guns 2x their cost.
So whats the best MAK for me to look for as an all around gun in quality and reliability and fun to shoot but has a decent price and readily available? Smaller is better as then i at least have a chance of making a back pocket bug out of it if its small enough.

It's my understanding that the East German one's are the best, but you'll pay for them.
To be honest, they are not pretty...they are just exactly like a tiny version of an AK only more accurate.
You will find, after the .45ACP that they are easy to shoot and cost a whole lot less to train with.
In a perfect world, where weight, number of rounds, and money didn't matter, there would be better options. But, for $200.00 to have an uber reliable 8 round semi-auto that will feed HP's all day the Mak is tough to beat.
For CC, it may not be the best choice, but for $200 I'd wager that it is.
Here's another way to look at it. If you carry a hangun in your truck/car and it was broken into, would you rather lose your 1911 or a $200 easily replaceable milsurp? Either will keep the bad guys away (let's not discuss ballistics as that's a given) and if you train with the Mak at all, you can get double-taps at 25' easily in a paper plate. Besides, I'd wager more people have met their Maker at the end of a Mak than almost any other handgun...
Just buy one....you can't go wrong.

Ive seen most of their varieties, But im just not sure which model would be the best to look for?
It would make a good car gun since its hard to draw while seated.
My local pusher has Maks all the time, But since i dont know what models to look at i just keep going past them. I love to tinker and fine tune my guns and i need to learn how to do some basic refinishing anyhow so this may be a good reason to pick on up.

Um, you only have one model of makarov, that is the PM, originally designed by the Russians, and licensed to the east Germans, Bulgarians and Chinese (type 59)

Then you have other pistols in 9x18mm Mak, like the FEG PA 63, Polish PA-64, 83, and the CZ82, and CZ Kevin (Micro Desert Eagle) and a few others, so please, don't confuse a Makarov, with a pistol which shoots 9x18 Makarov.

That said, most maks (PM type) are about 300+ locally for me, would love to get one, but the only one I have seen was a bulgy, and he was asking too much

Ok that clears alot of my confusion up, Ill be looking at my local store and see what they have. Im sure the other guns you mentioned would be good guns also but the PM Mak you speak of is what im always reading about so thats the one id go with if i get the chance.

Thanks for the schooling!

Um, kinda, cause most gun stores and more than few distributors label anything that shoots 9x18mak, a makarov

so there are Maks (PM)
and maks (any thing that shoots makarov)

so it would be like calling all 9x19 pistols 'lugars'

DasFriek

In my personal experience (and also from reading online), as far as trigger feel and overall quality are concerned, I would rank the East German best, then the Bulgarian next and Russian commercial last.

I have no direct experience with a Chinese Mak yet, and haven't taken out a Russian military that I recently acquired, so I can't vouch for those.

OP,

I guess my only convert thus far is my wife. But recently, she is liking the 38 super 1911 more.

SOG and JGSALES have unissued Bulgarian Mak's. Got mine from SOG, and once I cleaned all the cosmoline off, it was clear that it was unissued and never fired.

Very nice little guns for the price. The only problem is that CZ-82's are currently cheaper.

If anyone is into 9x18 pistols in general, SOG has unissued PA-63's for under $150 at the moment.

The P-64 has a bit of a kick but is nice to shoot. It would make a good trunk gun or bug out gun.

What is a "Bug Out" gun? The P 64 is an excellent CCW piece. Thinner than any Kahr and robust and built like a tank. It has chrome lined barrel and is accurate as it needs to be at 20 feet. You just can't get a more reliable auto loader in any caliber than a Makarov PM of a Polish P64 9x18.

Just something to remember...if CC isn't your goal, the CZ82 is really a more refined weapon with higher capacity. If I had to choose between any of the mipsurp 9x18's out there, the CZ would win hands-down for a trunk gun. It's just heavier and thicker than the Mak and that makes it less comfortable for IWB carry. The P-64 is an excellent alternative to the Mak, slightly thinner yet, but they are a little harder to find at the moment.

Slightly off topic, but I keep sayin', hopin' someone will listen....

The CZ82 is very heavy (28oz?) for its size and caliber, but it is actually very thin if someone will make the right grips (HINT HINT). The grips only need to be .95" by my measurements if someone can form them out of metal. That would make the pistol less than an inch wide for frame and slide, and then maybe 1.05" for the controls if you do some sort of carry melt. If that all can be done relatively inexpensively, the '82 would all of a sudden be a bit more compelling for CCW at the price.

That painted on finish is just plum ugly on a CZ 82.....Makarov PM are purdy!:D

The IJ-70 with adjustable sights is a great deal, i love mine, and i definitely would vouch for the extreme reliability, i have seen these little guns filled with axle grease and frozen and run off several clips without a problem as part of a 1000 round torture test, only misfire was a dud primer.
