For cheap handguns let's compare the Makarov and Hi-point. Which one would you guys rather have?

Myself I would get a Makarov in either 9x18 or .380, but that is me...

I'm not a Hi-Point lover but if the choice was between a 45ACP Hi-Point and the Makarov, I would get the Hi-Point....the 9x18MM is an underpowered caliber and is just above a 380 in power... I have a Mak and it is at the bottom of the list of my handguns in order of preference.......

I see no reason to go for the excess bulk of a Hi-Point to achieve what the slim and svelte Makarov can.

In other words, the pretty girl does it better and she has bigger...ehem...rounds.

Get both and plenty of ammo and fire away see which one breaks first ,Throw that one away and carry the winner. I'll bet on the commie gun. :D

Makarov...no doubt.

I own two and they're better than any other small pistol I have ever shot...even a Walther PPK.

Well, I hate to be the only one.....About 2 yrs. ago a friend and I went to a Gun Show here. We saw the Hi-Point 9mm for $98.00 before tax., well we each bought one....SInce then I have fired it everytime I go to the range, 50-80 rounds per visit. After the first 200 rounds, break in time, I have had no problems with it, none...I have (2) clips and have been using CCI Blazers at ~$3.68/50, with no problems. I agree it's heavy, but that helps with the recoil....

Where are you buying 9mm ammo for $3.68/50? The cheapist I've seen is $5.

The same thing can be said of many other guns. The CZ-52 for one if you want to talk about cheap firearms. The Star BM was also going for a little over $100 at AIM Surplus a few months back.

Your expierience with them may have been good, but there are so many other guns out there with more going for them. I'm glad yours is reliable, but it is also (in this thread) fighting against a proven service history. The Soviets carried the makarov for a LOT of years.

Makarov. Even if it were in .22 LR. Agree, the Hi Point would make a better club though. :)

Makarov!

The Mak is a totally proven design, with fewer parts than a Glock! It is accurate, reliable and easy to shoot well. Spare parts, mags and ammo can all be had for a good price.

Act1man........Sometimes I get confused.... :)

Whm1974......Academy Sports, everyday price. In fact for a $1 more you can get them brass, also CCI Blazers. They are also carrying .380 CCI Blazers for ~$6.50/50, and they all work fine in my clips, uh, magazines. :D
I don't find them that dirty either..

None of the above. That is a choice between bad and worse. About the only thing the Mak has going for it is that it is somewhat small and tends to be reliable. The onlly thing the Hi-Point has going for it besides a low price tag is that it shoots a much more powerful cartridge (9mm or .45acp).

For about the same amount of cash (or less) you can get a Star Bm and not have to compromise. It shoots 9mm, it is accurate, reliable, compact, easy to shoot, feels good in the hand and is of the highest quality. Why settle for a weak and weird Mak or a pot metal clunker like the Hi-Point when you can get a gun that looks and feels like a real gun?

As far as I'm concerned it's apples and oranges. If you can only afford to pay $99 - $150 and you need a gun REAL SOON NOW then the Hi-Point fits the bill. Chances are that you'll be able to get a Hi-Point and ammo at your local gun store RIGHT NOW, whereas you'd have to order the Mak, ammo, pay the FFL transfer fee and WAIT (At least around here - and those prices add up.)

Granted the Hi-Point isn't pretty or elegant, but mine has been utterly reliable and I've heard time and time again that the customer service it tops. They are the "working man's gun" and thank god they exist so that the less wealthy among us can exercise their 2nd Amendment rights.

That said, if all things were equal (which they aren't), I'd get a Mak.

Makarov because I think the Hi-Point is the ugliest thing on Earth! This is based only on looks and even if the Hi-Point is a better shooter I would go with the Mak.

I don't consider my stable of Mak's "cheap" guns. Inexpensive, yes. Tremendous value for the money, you bet! They are in a different league than High Point - shoot one and then see if you don't become a Makaholic.

and what are the Russians using now??...it's not the 9x18MM

They've moved on to the 9x19 for most pistols, but they developed another handgun to fire it. They didn't bother importing a bulky, blow-back operated .380 handgun.

They also used the Makarov for 40 some odd years. They even tried to improve on the 9x18 to extend its service life.
