Well I got back from the range and they don't have 9x18 Makarov ammo there. I'm wondering if they will carry it if I start gripping?

Mak no problem, good gun, battle quality. like a smle or a rack garand,

feeds all the time shoots all the time

No question at all. The Makarov. Makarov may be underpowered by some people's standards, but it will always fire and place the shots where you want them to be - two of the most important factors in a defensive pistol.

Makarov. Like it has been stated, the Soviets used them from 1951 until the 80's or so, the simple design IS genius, and it's surprisingly accurate.

If you have any gun shows nearby, buy your ammo there. The Wolf steel-cased stuff is what the pistol was built for, and Wolf 95 gr. FMJ costs around $5.50/50-round box at my local shows. JHP is higher, but if it will be your range gun, the FMJ will be fine. You'll enjoy shooting it, your friends will enjoy shooting it, and it does have that Eastern Bloc Cool!

How hard is it to get one in .380? Or to reload for?
--------------------------------------------------------------

The 9x18 round is very easy to reload, just like any straight wall case, 45ACP, 38, etc.

There's an unlimited supply of 9x18 brass by trimming 9mm (9x19) brass.

Lead bullets are VERY accurate in the Mak.

Reloads can be tailored to make a defense load that is right close to the 9mm factory load.
