I have a Remington 700 BDL Detachable Magazine Rifle. I have decided to buy a nice stock (McMillan or HS Precision) get a new Barrel (probably a douglas or Krieger) and put some nice glass on it. I was wondering, what do I have to buy to switch it from a DM rifle to one with a hinged or blind floor plate? I'm partial to the hinged so any advice is appreciated.

I don't know the exact parts needed but it is pretty easy. When I had my 700 ADL restocked, the gunsmith used a BDL stock and put a hinged floorplate on it. It makes it so easy to just throw the bolt back and drop the rounds out of the bottom at the end of a hunt.

I would look at the parts diagram in your owners manual. I would bet it has exploded diagrams of the ADL and BDL. Just compare the two.

I can see the appeal of changing it from an ADL to a BDL, but I personally would prefer the removeable magazine over either of the blind versions.

Why do you want to remove the DM option?

You need the same parts as the ADL to BDL conversion.

The remington DM has a number of reliability problems and most real tactical shooters are of the opinion that a DM in a tactical rifle is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist and merely invites trouble. Remember the one shot mantra.

If you really want a DM then HS Precision and I think Badger Ordinance both have reliable offerings.

Detachable magazines are unnecessary IMO.

I've tried the HS precision floorplate/detachable magazine and didn't care for it.
On the good side it works, the quality is much better than the factory floorplate and is a more solid platform, no modifications to the stock to install and it was smoother than the factory parts (the top round aligns with the bore, straight shot into the chamber).
On the downside, the magazine has to be removed to reload, rounds can't be loaded in through the top.
I'm a slow learner, had a hard time remebering not to load rounds from the top.

It's a bit more than just parts

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but as I've just tried to convert a DM to BDL, I can say that the DM receiver has an enlarged (widened) opening for the DM magazine to fit up inside (at least mine does). This larger opening allows the BDL style magazine follower to travel too high and interfere with the bolt travel and also the cartridges do not get placed correctly for the bolt face to engage them (yes I have the correct follower for the bolt face).

I imagine you could buy a new receiver and have your barrel installed and the headspace set correctly, but then you might as well just buy a new rifle. A really good machinist might be able to add some material and re-machining the receiver, but I don't know one who would try it. However, it might be possible to manufacture a different magazine Box that would replace the missing material in the receiver. If this works I'll enter a new post.
