Since I am a dennizen of the PRK, I cannot purchase a new (or used, or even inherit) an AR-15. It is specifically banned by semi-auto nature by type ('AR-15 and clones') in the CA AWB law.

However, the entire language of the law applies to only semi-automatic guns.

Could I make a straight-pull bolt-action AR-15? Would the gun be easially (ideally w/o tools) convertible back to semi-auto should the Martians invade? Would just plugging the gas system do it?

It would look something like this in my mind;
(Cobb FA-50 images attached, this is a straight-pull 'bolt' action gun.)

Don't accept legal advice from me, but.............
I have read that people in California are using a lower reciever that does not accept a magazine. In other words, the aluminum has not been milled out of the magazine well when the lower reciever was manufactured.
So, instead of trying to make a bolt action AR15, they make a single shot AR15.

444, there are mag-less 10-shot AR-15s even, the FAB-10 lower is CA legal.

You load it by disassembleing the weapon, and loading individual rounds back into the (internal) mag.

I'm sure it's jolly untill you've fired 10 rounds, at which point, it becomes somewhat less than useless :D) (takes a while to re-load even with stripper clips.)

On the bright side, since it is not a detachable-mag gun, it can have a flash hider, collapsable stock, pistol grip, and even bayo lug! Yay! ;)

I am sure this is nothing new, but I wonder what they legal status would be of manufacturing an AR15 lower in which you had a fake magazine. The aluminum is cut out to look just like a normal AR15 with a 30 round magazine inserted in the lower. Then you make the inside of the fake magazine functional, and capable of 30 round capacity-however it is not detachable from the rifle. The point being to make a rifle with the function and look of an AR15 with a 30 round magazine, but the magazine is fixed. You have to seperate the upper and lower and charge it with stripper clips.
Is there a magazine round limit on firearms that don't have an detachable magazine ? I know there are tube fed .22 rifles that hole more than 10 rounds, right ? I am sure this is the same as the 10 round rifles you mention, but this one would have a 30 round fixed magazine.

Yeah, this all sounds crazy, but according to many on this board it is but a small price to pay for the glory of living in California.

444, check out http://www.fabten.com/ That is exactly what you are talking about, except with a 10-rounder.

The CA Assault Weapon Ban does cover fixed-magazine semi-autos with greater than 10 round capacity. (.22LR is exempt from the CA ban, so 15+ round tube mag semi-auto .22s are perfectly legal.) Are you sitting comfortably?

If you really want your ears and eyes to bleed, the entire text of the CA laws are here: http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/

I've actually read each and every word. I feel less intelligent, and much angrier for the result.

Living in CA is all and all very cool, but that's not to say I don't visit your state often to legally excercise my constitutional rights to fire an AR-15! (I have a right to an M-16 as I see it too, but that's a 'class III' item. Pheh.) At least not all parts of CA are filled with idoit-sheeple. Actually most are pretty decent folk, especially in the less densely populated areas. Generally (but not always) for the better, they're around 10 years ahead of the rest of the US socially. That's still not to say we have our fair share and then some of the hollywood-idoit types, but they're few and loud, and don't speak for us all.

It's really not too bad gun wise either. 10 day wait on all firearms, and handguns require a HSC <basic safety training class> The AW ban does limit some of the more cool guns one can own, and it's complete BS. But there are many loud voices in the PRK (we even call it that ourselves.) that do speak up very loudly when rights are infringed. For instance, for all the bitching you hear about in CA, compare to New Jersey, who's AW law criminalized ALL guns with >15round cap. No grandfathering. So Joe Hunter who gives his 15 year old an old 10/22 with 20 round mag just made both people felons.
Some consolation I know, but at least CA residents who already had one got to keep their ARs.

I'm staying, can you tell? :) And I'm damned well staying with an AR-15 if I can all swing it!

I think it was Bushmaster that was making a PUMP-ACTION AR; would that fit your bill? Here in Canada, an AR is an AR is an AR, because they all use the same lower, but if CA law is written by action type, you may be able to have a 30-round pump-action AR. HTH.

This Thread Enrages Me.

We should all be out happily plinking away with our firearm of choice, blasting tin cans to little itty bitty scraps, rather than having to worry about ANY of this nonsense.

BUT NOOOO...Despite the fact that RKBA is supossedly "secure", we have to stay up late, scanning legislative sites for new proposed infringements to prevent it from getting worse, we write our letters, make our contributions and phone calls, and try to make it better, and when none of this works...

We end up having to build complete abominations of firearms so we can go out to the range and fire something that once resembled our rifle of choice, and we worry about whether they're acceptable to the authorities or not. We fret about what day our 15 round magazine was built, or whether our handgun is on "the approved list". We count stupid features on our firearms, with an eye towards keeping out of Club Fed.

I've said this a million times, and I'll keep saying it till I no longer need to:

This isn't right.
This is wrong, wrong, wrong.
This nonsense is entirely innappropriate for a free people.

And it's complete bull???? to boot.

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

And "it's all for your safety."

A friend of mine told me about a conversion kit that turns the AR-15 from a centerfire rifle to a rimfire .22. Apparently there is a bolt group, etc. that converts it in less than a minute to take .22 rimfire rounds and thus circumvents the CA centerfire AR law.

Good news, CA likes .50s just fine! Some county recently tried to pass a local ban, but it got tossed out like so much used bathwater.

Infact, if you saw off the pistol grip  on a Barret M82A1 semi-auto .50BMG, it's a perfectly legal non-assault-weapon, just like any long gun.

Of course, an APIT or Raufoss .50BMG is a *liteeetle* excessive for home defense...

The effort to ban the 50 wasn't successful. However, even when the AWB goes away in '04, our Kaliban of '89 will still be here and we still won't have the new toys everyone else can have. Guess they're making it safe for all the nation's felons here.

Huh!???

You need to get out now! Your judgement has obviously been affected. 10 day wait is not too bad? Jeepers!

What are our recourses and the likelihood of getting this asinine law repealed? I'm guessing slim to none, but yet one last ember of hope still remains with me that one day we will take back this great state of ours...

So, is anybody spearheading this effort right now? Do we need to get signatures to get it on a future ballot or write our state representatives to pass a bill or what?
