Now that the bill of rights are no more thanks to H.R. 6166 our dictatorship can do stuff like this;

Man Arrested For Criticizing Cheney Files Lawsuit

Charlie Brennan, Rocky Mountain News | October 3 2006

A Denver-area man filed a lawsuit today against a member of the Secret Service for causing him to be arrested after he approached Vice President Dick Cheney in Beaver Creek this summer and criticized him for his policies concerning Iraq.
Attorney David Lane said that on June 16, Steve Howards was walking his 7-year-old son to a piano practice, when he saw Cheney surrounded by a group of people in an outdoor mall area, shaking hands and posing for pictures with several people.

According to the lawsuit filed at U.S. District Court in Denver, Howards and his son walked to about two-to-three feet from where Cheney was standing, and said to the vice president, "I think your policies in Iraq are reprehensible," or words to that effect, then walked on.

Ten minutes later, according to Howards' lawsuit, he and his son were walking back through the same area, when they were approached by Secret Service agent Virgil D. "Gus" Reichle Jr., who asked Howards if he had "assaulted" the vice president. Howards denied doing so, but was nonetheless placed in handcuffs and taken to the Eagle County Jail.

The lawsuit states that the Secret Service agent instructed that Howards should be issued a summons for harassment, but that on July 6 the Eagle County District Attorney's Office dismissed all charges against Howards.

The lawsuit filed today alleges that Howards was arrested in retaliation for having exercised his First Amendment right of free speech, and that his arrest violated his Fourth Amendment protection against unlawful seizure.

Looks like the SS has a habit of harassing people who peacefully express their views, arresting them, then dumping it on the local justice system to deal with it. If you folks recall, the SS did the same thing in Illinois to a couple who told clinton, "You suck, and all those [rangers] died," referring to the Battle of Mogadishu.

The guy in New Orleans who said "F- you" to him from down the street got much the same treatment. Secret service in his house, cuffed and such to be questioned.

Free speech? Ha. Maybe once upon a time.

Didn't you hear rosie o donut? The 1st amendment isn't a real right. Nothing in the first 10 amendments is a real right.

They should just be thankful they didn't get burned alive in their houses by the alphabet agency boys. Deal with it like good subjects.

Free speech is all well and good when what one is saying has the approval of our servants. But let one voice an opinion different from that our servants approve of, and one might find oneself classified as an "illegal combatant" or some other such nonsense.

Indeed Skywarp, that tree is looking rather parched and hungry these days...

Im telling ya, its gettin to be revolution time.

Where do I sign up?

It was revolting enough when the UK was doing this, but given the facts as stated above (I don't know if this is the whole story or the sanitized version or what) it's a clear first amendment violation by a bunch of jack booted thugs who are not working in service of the constitution but some politician instead.

Out with them all.

why do i have the feeling there is just a little more to the conduct that got him arrested than mere "criticism"?

Arrests

Bum arrests do happen all the time. Friend was one of them. But its a little scarier when H.R. 6166 is around undermining things. You should have a little concern in my opinion I know I do. I wont get all fanatical about it.

Assume the victim is at fault, instead an abusive and overreaching government. Lovely.

And we go merrily further down THAT road...the one that leads to frantic hushing in public places, lest "they" hear.

That's not American.

Suing the Secret Service Agent

Suing the Secret Service Agent is absolutely the right approach, although I would also sue the agency seperately and ummm jointly. Problem is they are almost certainly going to lie and say you said or did something you didn't. Better have a recorder. Better yet, a cell phone with your home answering machine on it. I wonder if it would be possible to get a judgment specifying the agent had to pay his part of the judgment personally, his agency couldn't indemnify him would be possible?

Suing the government, they have taxpayer money(unlimited) to screw you over. And please, stop with the revolution already. The "ruling class" would kill some, most, or all of "us" in a heartbeat and convince the survivors that they were lucky that the government yet again protected them from harm. Joe

amen manedwolf. we have no obligation to, and in no way benefit from being discreet when it comes to highlighting government thuggery.

and to whoever made that statement, any of us has just as much reason to assume there WASN'T anymore to it, than to assume there was. this sort of response is conditioned.

It's only a little bit worse than W's people throwing citizens out of a public meeting because of the bumper sticker that was on their car.

King George and King Richard.

So what if the DA dropped the charges. What I saw up top was a one sided story. I won't assume that is all there is to it.

If that is truly all that was said, they should also fire some SS agents as they are overstaffed and have way too much time on their hands.

So what exactly is H.R. 6166? I guess I missed the bandwagon on memorizing House bills.

So, I'm imagining this in my mind, but with the Secret Service operatives in uniforms and black boots. And swastikas. Our democracy is in more and more trouble each and every day. :cuss:

Uhhh... if this guy had done more than said something, he wouldn't have been arrested "10 minutes later".

Sorry, but I should be able to stand in front of any politician and tell 'em anything I want. As long as I'm not loud enough to be "disturbing the peace" (as in, regardless of who my voice is directed at) or threatening (as defined by law), Secret Service should stand their behind their mirrored sunglasses and watch impassively. Once I walk away, their interest in me is done.

Let me know when that revolution starts.

The Revolution starts this November, if you choose to participate. We vote 'em out. Every repub that doesn't demonstrably stand against illegal immigration, the PA, illegal wire tapping, violations of the 4th and 1st amendments - hell, violations of the entire constitution and BOR.
If they don't stand for repealing the 1936 BS that essentially started all the gun control BS - *on record* - we vote 'em out.
We tell the bastiges "Walk the Walk, or you'll be kickin' rocks down the road".

Join *This Revolution* or keep your teeth together.
